Suspension question
Hi all,
I have an 03 3.0 no sport with 28k miles and I've had it for about a year. Over that year I have noticed that the suspension seem a little stiff. I always thought thats the way it is supposed to be but I was curious how other X5s are. My previous car was an 05 Audi A6 and it was no where near as bumpy. With my head resting on the headrest and driving on the expressway I noticed that even a little road imperfection causes my head as well as my passenger to bounce off the headrest. In addition I noticed that when slowing down to a full stop the car slightly bounces front to back about approx 3 times. Although its slight I was wondering if anyone else has this experience. Can anyone comment on this experience before I go to a used car dealer to pretend to purchase an X5 and take it for a test drive for comparison. I feel like the cars mileage is too low for suspension issues. Thanks |
check your tires pressure.
too much air maybe??? |
Uhh, I'm no mechanic but I don't think any vehicle is supposed to bounce front to back 3x. I have not experienced what you have but its probably your shocks/struts. This is not scientific but try the bounce test. Try to bounce each corner of the X. When you let go it should not keep bouncing excessively.

Sports suspension is definitely stiffer, not sure though compared to your Audi as I haven't driven one before...

my tire pressure is definitely within the specs and I have checked it recently.
The bounce back and forth is very slight but since I know its there I notice it. My GFs VW Rabbit is more comfortable to ride in than my car. I just tell her that the X is more sporty. There may not be anything wrong with the car and I just have a higher expectancy especially coming from an Audi A6. BTW my wheels are stock 17" |
the bounce suggests to me that dampers are done , do the bounce test like twinspoppa says , if you push down on car then it should spring back up then settle down immediatly , if it bounces a couple of times that says dampers done .
