OMG this is so odd....I was driving down the block I usually park on in the gramercy park area of manhattan and I saw a blue X that usually parks in the same vicinity as me and that X had a huge plexi-glass housing over the entire mirror. I wanted to take a pic but ofcourse didnt have my blackberry today but once i see it again Im gonna take a pic of it. I guess that cars been hit also.

What can we do to avoid this happening to me.?

I don't know if there is anything other than removing both side mirrors when you park. :dunno:

It's not like it's rare to see X5's in NY. I have a 10 minute drive to work and I usually spot 2 or 3 X5's during my drive. I can't believe a whole new mirror will cost more than a set new wheels.

Jay, I would... but for me to have to go through Manhattan, then most likely through the Holland Tunnel... etc, would probably take me more than an hour just to get there. :(

I think its more likely that their mirror just went bad and needed one. Probably easier for him to swipe yours as its the same color as opposed to Xs being rare.

Don't know about that, at $1500 a replacement, seems like enough of a reason to create a market for them. Think about quick the guy can do it say in relation to a car stereo. Sucks.

Wow...I know how you feel... about a month ago I had my X5 parked by the train station in the Bx with the mirrors folded in. when I got out of work and went back uptown to the car, the passenger side glass was cracked. Looks like they tried to pop it off with a screwdriver which didn't work....I went to a glass place and had a used oem mirror (auto dimming and heated like the original) installed for $50.

Hope it works out for you.

Sorry to hear that but I'll add a little experience, I had some SOB in a beat up pickup truck turn my mirror into a new lego project (no piece was bigger than a lego) he must have been goin 45mph+, anyway yea a complete replacement mirror/housing, which I think is all they sell, I had estimated from insurance was $675(E53) + labor and painting, so you could buy it yurself and just have then paint the front piece, which comes off, maybe save $$
