Cold Air Intake Suggestions 06' 4.8is: Recomendations
Hey folks.....
Looking at AFE cold air intake
Other product line to consider? TIA:thumbup: |
Dinan is the one you want.
|
Any compelling evidence over the AFE set-up or this is your personal experience?
TIA |
I know Rich will chime in because he has the AFE CAI.
It was discussed a little while ago on this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...ifference.html I have the Dinan CAI on my 2006 4.8is. But I also have the Throttle Body and the Stage 3 software installed. Between the AFE and the Dinan there won't be any large HP or torque gains, the Dinan is quoted at a 15HP@6500 RPMs and 12ft-lb@6000 RPMs. The Dinan CAI carries $739.00 price tag along with it, but they are offering a 15% rebate right now. However, an issue with the Dinan CAI is that they recommend that you load Stage 2 software into your X5 which will price tag up even more, and THAT has to be installed by the dealer so you are going to encounter labor costs as well. I don't know the AFE numbers and the price off the top of my head but I am sure somebody can chime in on it. Personally, this is my second BMW with Dinan products installed on them. I like the reassurance of their warranty and that they are typically installed by a authorized shop/dealership. Dinan BMW - Warranty Basically you will hear both sides of the argument, but really it just comes down to what you are willing to spend. Here's some pics of the CAI in my 4.8is, it looks pretty sweet!! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3543/...36dee0e967.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3462/...4f92a56a85.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3589/...346c380515.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3624/...5eae5ae652.jpg |

I did the AFE CAI Xpipe MOD and Supersprint exhaust....all in conjunction work very well... Then I just recently did the Dinan Software Eng and tranny! I do not have the upgradred throttle body! If I did the Dinan Stuff first, knowing me I would of went Dinan all the way...but I pieced it together not knowing i would eventually do software... sidenote....I now run the AFECAI with a K&N filter as that is what DINAN uses within their CAI..... :) if you are just looking to do a CAI go AFE ..not because I like it..but because it's simply just cheaper and will give the overall end reslult that a stand alone Dinan would do. jsears..what say you?? Thanks! That's always good to hear!

Thanks! I love opening the hood and checking everything out. Rich, I am completely jealous of your exhaust system, that's next on the list for me!!!!
I would have to completely agree with Rich. If you are just doing the CAI and no other engine mods (software, throttle body, etc) than go with the AFE. Its not worth the price of admission just to have 1 Dinan product. The Stage 1 AFE just seems like you are adding a shield around the current intake. You could probably save yourself 200 bucks and make one out of cardboard and aluminum foil. :bustingup So, I would say Stage 2 is the way to go if you do the AFE. Quote:

The shifting in this car is all but strange.....so any smoothing out under deceleration in DS and surge in D under acelleration would be a huge welcomed improvement! |
Depends on what software you get. I would get Stage 2 software, they tune the software specifically to use with their CAI. However, they do, do Stage 1 software testing with an K&N Free Flow Air Filter. Granted there maybe a marginal difference there, but I would go with what they recommend .
Stage 2 software will run you $599.99 and the CAI will run you $739.99. But you do get 15% off of that total price with a mail-in rebate. The dealer has to do the Software and will charge you about an hours worth of labor. The CAI you can do yourself or have them install it and it is about 2 hours of labor. I got the Stage 3 software, CAI and Throttle Body after discount and labor for about $2000. To me, it was worth it. However, to others maybe not. Quote:
