It can be done on the 3.0i as well. There is an old thread from 2007 that explains the whole thing:

The 4.8is tips are welded onto the Y pipes purchased from Pep Boys...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2215/...6f730edc8e.jpghttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2311/...8215f69132.jpg

The poster had their muffler guy cut the slanted/stock tips off, leaving about an inch to weld the Y pipes on to. They also pray painted the inside of the Y pipes a flat black color before they had their muffler guy cut the Y pipes to the right length, too...

*** these are approximate areas where to cut the Y pipes... ... and what they look like when installed...
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2049/...8182176381.jpghttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2193/...e630dfdc2c.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2404/...c5d8c2416a.jpghttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2368/...1005abf8e4.jpg

The key is the Y pipes and finding a good muffler shop and person who will cut the Y pipes, weld them onto the muffler, and then weld the 4.8 tips onto the Y pipes. No other tips out there in the market come even close to the OEM 4.8is exhaust look. With the staggered, bigger and wider 20" wheels, the slanted stock exhaust tips looked too wimpy. The 4.8is tips is the way to go!

You can have them welded on the 3.0i's single tip. No need for Y pipe!

sobi6111 04-04-2009 03:22 AM

any pics welded on 3.0?

I bought mine here: STAINLESS STEEL BMW X5 E53 TWIN EXHAUST TAILPIPE TRIM on eBay, also Exhaust Components, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 07-Apr-09 20:02:59 BST) Bargain “! Considering the changes it makes to your X5
All I had to do was cut the tips of the exhaust, the bit that bends down”! Then proceeded by sliding the tips in, tighten the bracket and also welded the tip to the muffler for safe keeping”!

Where's a good place to buy the 4.6/4.8is tips? Tischer? Elsewhere?

sonnyboyzz 08-03-2009 08:53 PM

What do you guys think about tips on ebay like this one for a 3.0? BMW X5 3.0i E53 Dual Stainless Exhaust Pipes Tips:eBay Motors (item 330336934693 end time Aug-10-09 03:24:14 PDT)

Are they any good?

bankerkys 08-03-2009 09:03 PM

I went with Hedman tips from Summit Racing. $85 or so for both.

Pewters 08-04-2009 06:55 AM

I'm having 4.8is tips fitted to my 3.0i on friday so i'll post some pics when they are done and let you know how the guy did it.

Tleong 08-04-2009 09:07 AM

I know KillCrap had a pair of 4.6is, but he wanted $400 + shipping.....

Did you have it done? Pics?

If you weld the Y-Pipe Extension piece between the tips and the muffler, will the tips stick out too far???

Pewters 08-11-2009 12:10 PM

I did have the tips fitted although the guy turned out to be a total loser and i'm not happy as stick out way too far.........safe to say he did not get paid and i need to take it somewhere else to sort them. However he did not use a y pipe, he extended the tips and welded them direct to the muffler and if i am honest when i get them recessed i think they will look good

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...wtnerm/exd.jpg

I did find this poking out from under the bonnet near the headlight the following day and tbh i wanted to stck it the guy !!!!! (not litterly just showing you how p1$$ed i was)

http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...tnerm/0000.jpg

Anyway let me know your thoughts

sonnyboyzz 08-11-2009 06:49 PM

Wow a screwdriver!!? :wtf: What lazy ass techs! lol

Yeah the tips look like they need to be tucked in maybe another half an inch to an inch...

So he did not use the Y-pipes?

What did he use to extend the tips?

Pewters 08-12-2009 12:05 PM

Yeah i'll get them set back further for defo.........i even gave the guy good pics of a 4.8is for reference to where i wanted them and he still got it wrong :dunno:

Anyway he used a sheet of stainless steel and rolled it to the shape of the tips and welded it on so the tip was about 12" in lenth and then welded it straight to the muffler............i'll try and get you some underneath pics if this dont help

sonnyboyzz 08-12-2009 01:21 PM

Good luck. Keep us posted!

Tleong 08-12-2009 01:50 PM

If you don't mind me asking - Where did you get the 4.8 tips from? and how much did it cost? Thanks

Pewters 08-12-2009 05:20 PM

I got mine from a dealer here in the UK but maybe someone in the US can able to point you in the right direction.

Tleong 08-12-2009 05:25 PM

Oh. I didn't look at your location carefully enough. I've been told junkyards.... which has been of no help =/

chigga 08-12-2009 07:11 PM

Maybe it's just me, but i LOVE that it sticks out!! looks way more aggressive!!

I contacted Tischer BMW, and here's what they said:

18107512709 $90.36 each

Shipping via UPS Ground within the US on these would run in the $10-$12.00 range.

Choose OEM or give them a call.

Tleong 08-17-2009 08:44 AM

Sonnyboyzz- Thanks for clearing up the issue.

Tleong 08-17-2009 11:01 AM

I contacted the dealership. They are the 4.6/4.8 tips. I have a few questions which they weren't able to answer... hopefully you guys can provide the help.

1) Do I need to order anything else to install this on my 2001 3.0i?
2) How is the installation? Is it welded or bolted? How much will installation cost?
3) Are the tips purely cosmetic? If i want better air flow and sound, will I need the entire exhaust?

Thanks guys. Sorry if any of these questions are repetitive....

Tleong 08-22-2009 05:54 PM

Can anyone help with the above questions?:(

If you read through the first page of this post, you will find your answers. And these tips are just the cosmetic TIPS, nothing to do with performance.
