I have a 2001 4.4 with 97K miles.

I have one of the dreaded no-reverse tranny problems. I'm looking at $3K plus for a rebuild.

So far I have had the following issues:
Valley Pan Gasket: $760
Water pump & thermostat: $620
Front Brakes: $430
Valve Gasket Cover: $400
Window Regulator: $275
CV Boot: $400
Control arms: $700

I love driving my car but it is built very poorly.

Other than the tranny re-build (which is an known issue with the 4.4), the rest of the issues you listed are pretty normal for an 8 year car.

window regs,control arms,h20 pump and vp gasket...i don't think so at that mileage. the brakes seems like alot of cash but that sounds like dealer pricing. in any case it's a shame the x5 hasn't improved on some items over the years.

I have an '01 as well that I've had since new and have 87K miles--I've had the same control arms, window regulator, valve cover gasket, water pump and thermostat and CV boots. This is over 8 years and 3 of these items just happened recently (and the boots and control arms were covered under an extended warranty I had)---so average cost that over 8 years--not a whole lot. If someone has just bought one 3 years ago then, yes, that is a lot. If you buy a 5 year old car you are driving it right when things will start happening.

Own an '04 3.0d 130,000km for 2-3 months now, I will have to agree that the X5 is not built to the standard that one would expect from a BMW. I also own a 318. The X5 is space generous but a lot of the fitments were designed as an afterthought to fit. I spent a whole month cleaning the car inside out after buying it. The car came with a blown CV and had that replaced. The car history indicated that the oil separator, rotors, breather tube(?) and turbo charger have been replaced. There is still that irritating rattling noise at the back of the car on a slightly bumpy road that I have not been able to figure out. And I have taken and tighten everything out that could be the cause of it.

Other than that, I won't go back to driving a sedan anymore :thumbup: :popcorn: :popcorn: :popcorn:

I am not understanding the correlation between someone who is given (the link above) or purchases (Redvault) a car with 100K miles on it and wondering why they are spending money to get it fixed. I think that is kind of given considering the age of the vehicle. If you buy it when it's new or only a couple years old and keep it you spread the cost of any repairs over the life of the vehicle which will be little.

A small point - 130000KM equate to ~80000Miles. For our usage here in New Zealand, the milage is very high for an '04 car. One would expect the annual milage for a car to be between 10000-15000KM (6500-9500Miles). My X5 has done way more than the norm - it being a company car and I suspect have the normal service but not much TLC. Having said this, I also own a Volvo 760GLE which is 20 years old and it still has the original rotors and CV boots/joints. No work done on the engine other than religiously changing oil/filter every 6 months or 5000KM (and brake fluid, transmission, air/fuel filter - the usual when due).
