Rear passenger door

Hi all,

My REAR passenger door lock is playing me up! Most of the time it cannot be opened from the outside when unlocking via the remote-the outside handle pulls up with no purchase like its still locked. But it can be opened from the inside using the handle. Once this is done you can then open the door via the outside handle.

Before anyone screams at me to 'DO A SEARCH', I have already!!!, and found these problems only relating to FRONT doors, not REARS!! I have already taken the trim off and had a look at the lock (what you can see of it), tried WD40 etc, but no difference-so it will want replacing, unless of course someone knows another remedy...?

I managed to unbolt the lock from the door no problem, but does anyone know how to remove the lock as I could not see a way of getting my hand in there to even release the bowden cable etc.. It is an extremely small area to get into:wow: , only a small child or a contortionist would be able to I'm sure..!

Any help, or suggestions would be better than what I already know.:dunno: Thanks, Ian

There is no diffrent between the front and rear door .
Sound like you have a bad outside door handle carrier.
Using the homepage DIY to fix the problem.

Thanks, I've had a look and it doesn't really seem to be the same-particularly the space in which to work.... I've had the front door trim cover off and played around with the lock for another problem some time ago, and the difference in working space is major!

Just another point, this is an intermittent fault where the outside door handle chooses to work from time to time-does it really sound like the carrier that is at fault? I only ask this because everyone who has had problems have specified they are hard faults....

Sounds like when it is acting up the door latch/lock is releasing the double lock, but not unlocking. When you pull the inside handle it releases the second layer of the double lock on the first pull then opens with the second pull.

Does the lock indicator plastic peg pop up when you unlock it with the remote when you are having the problem?

i had same problem on both left side doors . dealer replaced actuators under warranty .

Yes Weasel, thats exactly it! When the door unlocks from the remote the plastic peg does pop up, but it looks like it gets stuck then free's itself halfway up. The upwards movement is not as smooth as the others.

When it doesn't unlock using the remote, yes you do have to pull the inside lever twice to open the door...

Could it be the actuator as amacman is kind of suggesting, or do you have another idea/cause in mind?

The actuators are built into the latches on the X5... So unfortunately you are most likely looking at a door latch replacement.

Just to put this one to bed.... I finally got round to replacing the door latch assembly today and BINGO! it works a treat. Nothing wrong with the carrier, just the actuator, and it was far easier to replace than the carrier (recently replaced the drivers door carrier), so a nice little bonus there too!

hi all, i have almost the same prob. i can unlock all doors with remote except right rear door. plastic knob does not come up at all. i'm thinking door latch assembly or actuator is bad? does anyone have the part # for the right rear door latch for my 2001 x5? thanks, jeff

Am having a problem with my rear doors. They will not unlock with the remote, unlock button near the shifter or pulling the inside handle twice. The fuel filler cap does not unlock too but i have found a temporary solution for that.
I cannot remove the interior trim because well, the doors cannot open.

Help required, thanks in advance.

no help for DIY, but I mentioned this (lock pin does not rise, door won't open outside) at my last service and my beloved mechanic at the 'stealer' said 'ayep' and sprayed, tweaked.whutever and the problem has not returned (no parts, only labor)

my pass rear reg failed on the -Drive Home- from purchase, so it's already been cranky in there, but I am assured not from damage, etc. (only two regs replaced ~125KMi lifetime, here).. I empathize, but it appears there is a PM (didn't think to ask)

suggest changing topic title to rear passenger door LOCK? tia

I can no longer hear the problems of doors.
This month is replacing the lock on the front left, front right, and behind the left is starting to fail.
Three locks in one month, I´m crazy....whith the car !!!!

I did not understand much of what you replied, could you please clarify on how yr problem was solved by the stealer. Where di he spray and since my doors cannot open at the moment , i dont know where to start from.

Thanks.

sprayed, tweaked.whutever and the problem has not returned (no parts, only labor)

again, I didn't think to ask as it takes a bit to find out if the problem returns - it has not in my case, so apparently the stealer does have a preventative maintenance fix.
