Continuing from my last thread.... Here's how it looks in real life!!!!
Finally completed 99%, the only thing left is to de-chrome and black out the "X5" and "4.6i" badges. Let me know what you guys think. (more pics from post #6, #28, #54, #107, #119, #123.... and latest #148) Attachment 32113 Attachment 31919 Attachment 31923 More pics to come... |

Very very nice Simon, that's right up there with the select few. Looks better in real life pics compared to photoshop ones. We need to see more, more is good when an X5 looks like yours :2thumbs:
Just 1 question, what's with the orange hue from the headlights ?? What colour angel eyes & bulbs did you have fitted ?? |
very nice
very impressed how much it looks like your photoshop |

It looks incredible! It's very unique and the theme is great. It's not overdone either. I do see however, that you decided to go with the black door handles and upper hatch handle. :D The X5 and 4.6is emblems would look great in Shadowline but you could also just debadge. That would be a clean look. Oh, and perhaps a rear wiper delete.
I haven't a clue what the laws are in HK about tinting but a light to medium tint on the windows would look good. Lower that a little bit and I think your X5 would be complete. |
Thanks man. The Headlights came with AE installed: Each ring has about 4 or 5 bulbs spreaded around evenly. It doesn't look as nice as CCFL, and if you look carefully, you can see the hot spots of the bulbs on the rings. Given how how difficult it been for me to get the headlights, I didn't want to mess around with it to convert to CCFL. Someone on the forum change the bulbs to white LED, but I stayed with Yellow because it think it stands out a bit more for my car.

Was it your intention to leave the smaller door handle fixed trims unpainted or are they going to be done as well and did you have an option to have higher kelvin rating on A/eyes, they look like 4,500k. I only ask as I may be going with the same supplier, clear corners look really cool.
|
Thanks man. Yeh, I did go with the black handles. The doors for the X5 are big (plain) and I needed something to make it look "together" with the rest of the body.
However, I only did PARTIAL of the handles, leaving the "end part" of the handle with bodycolor. I'm still experimenting it to see if it look as "cheap" as the black handles on the low end BMWs. First impression is pretty ok, and I can take the black off pretty easier if I don't like them later on. Yep, I might go debadge if I can't black the badges. But I'll need to keep the rear wiper for the kind of weather here. They only allow tinking on the rear and back windows, so I didn't tint anything as it would look pretty stupid with uneven color of windows. And I've already lowered it by about an 1" all around with the H&R sprint kit. Quote:
|
Refer to my earlier reply about the handles.
And for the AE, nope, there was no option for different bulb / light color. But they can be replaced by DIY.. like this. ;) Quote:

Looks stunning “!!!!

As i said on your last thread i have never been a lover of darker wheels but i think you have changed my opinion especially with that colour combo and awsome mods nice job it looks great.

Simon, that is really some nice work on your car well done it looks cool.

Wow... thank you all for the compliment. I didn't expect the response was thAt good as I really didn't do a whole lot to the car.
x555a- same here, I never like black wheels until I saw mine.. haha:rofl: richirich- The bug is definitely highly contagious, and I definitely got infected thru the X3/5World ;-) weasel56- Thanks. I was going to ask you what's the best way to tint my fog lights? The tinted film that I wanted to buy had been discontinued :( I converted the fog to HID with the 6k bulbs to match the low beam, but I might switch to 4k or below as they do see better during foggy days, which happens a lot here. dsm2925- ha.. actually it does look like from the back that it can pull a tree! I'll post some pics looking from the back shortly. RMak- Wow.. "the best"! Thanks man. There are really quite a few awesome looking X5 here and hard to say which one is better or worse, they are all different or "personalized" ;-) cavx5- these are just oem calipers painted red! I also was unsure if red or black, but I chose red at the end just to make it "subtly LOUD" :-p |

That is one mean looking son-of-a-biatch! Everytime I see black 87s I think ... why do I have LeMans Blue!
I was going to suggest the black paint on the side creases (where it goes thorugh the handles) since you blacked out your handles. However, since you didn't paint the handles all black them that might not be such a good idea. Edit: How about smoked side markers? Also, how about adding evo "vortex" fins to the hatch spolier. I was going to add it on mine originally but went with the ACS replica. I kinda regret it as I think the vortex fins would have been nicer. I played with adding it on with the ACS but then it would be a bit busy. I still want to do something and have plans but gonna be too busy to be doing mods soon. Great job and wish I could see it in person! |

I can't see your rims too clearly from your signature, but how about paint them black with a thin lemans blue border??? The style of your rims look suitable. |
:yikes: simon thats one hot x!! great theme you got going there it turned out just like you intended!
i think you just inspired me to get some kind of theme going on my X .. |

I like it. I have been waiting the see a titanium silver with black wheels?
Did you paint the wheels and lip yourself? I gotta go with that look. (Black 87's w/silver lip) |
Love it. You set a new standard, that's the best black/silver theme I've seen on any BMW. Love the OEM colored AE's too

Hey guys,
Glad to join the titanium silver club with Zerochief's, Rich's, Essam's, MTX5, and Jayjay's! May be we should start a new thread to showcase all the Titan Silver  TwinsPoppa - I'm not sure about the vortex.. but I did think about adding the AC replica hatch spoiler, in black! themoth - Good luck on your projects. Not all mods cost a lot of money. You'd be surprised how little I spent in doing the whole thing! Jayjay - No problem. I'll take some close up pics shortly and post them. But for the "Kidney", I only painted the two "Kidney Rings" in Matt Black, leaving the "Kidney Grill" in the original titanium color. This helps to bring some details in the overall look of the Kidney (all black will look too flat and a little too ricey for me) bchrurch05 - no, I didn't buy a new set of rims. Just used the existing 87's and painted matt black, no powder coating. I'm not sure about which product as I left it to the workshop to do the job while I was on an overseas trip. Strip9r - there should be quite a few titan silver with black wheels on this forum. And nope, I didn't paint them myself, sent them to the workshop. My advise on the black 87's w/ silver lip: do go too think on the silver border, it will make your rims look smaller visually if it's too thick. Mine was only about 2mm, just up to the tiny "mark" at the end of each spoke. ZsX503 - Wow... "on any BMW" Yeh, I was pleasantly surprised too with the OEM/amber colored AE. I only wish they were brighter. Will try to post some high res later. Essam - I actually like painted bumpers most of the time, check out my X3 album from my signature ;) Oh yeh.... I really should update my sig soon :p: Michelle- wow... over 12k post :wow: But it's nice to hear from such senior member :p: weasel56- you are absolutely right about black rims being washed out in black, and that is exactly why I added the thin border to rims to avoid them been washed with the tyres and wheel archs. The red calipers was also a little trick added back a little (but loud :p: ) detail. If I remember, Rasta's ferric wheels are 214 or 215 (both of them I like very btw and I was seriously considering them), personally I don't think either one will work with the silver ring because the spokes of these rims is making a pretty strong "statement" already, adding the silver ring might make be make them look too "busy". |

Damn, looks good....... Decisions decisions
(thanks again Simon, awesome job!) My first thoughts are if I did this I would need to drop her to make it look right, but oh would it be right! http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...6/AllBlack.jpg http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...lverBorder.jpg |
wow.. hmm.. weasel, it will definately be unique but i think keeping the 87s silver looks better IMO..
|
I agree with mtX5. I think that all blacked out wheel will wash out your X. It'll be too black. The silver lip with black centers looks better but that look is getting a little played out. Don't get me wrong, I think it looks good but that look peaked a year or two ago.
Your silver 87s look great as is. They're a great contrast/compliment to the blacked out body and adds visual interest. |
Which was my thoughts honestly, from the start... but it is good to see and confirm before I am tempted when it is time for new tires.
I think if the X was as slammed as low as Richirich's, then wheels like rasta's ferric 215's would look good with spacers. Other than that, I'm gonna stick with the OEM 87's in silver. Thanks again Simon! |
Quote:
|
Nice X! very unique. I've been thinking of doing the same thing you did to the kidney grills and to the fog rings but wasn't sure how it would turn out...now I know they look great! Enjoy your ride and again, nice job... :2thumbs:
|
Yehooo... got my signature updated... FINALLY :p:
bchurch05- yes. they must have blasted first. mtX5- no need to photoshop the 4.6 body kit on to yours, there are already plenty of photos with Silver with the kit on this forum  weasel56- I personally think black rims is perfect for your black theme. And I think the silver border looks wicked with your tinted AE  I'll post the other photochop version tonight. Most of your shots happen to have your wheels under the shadow. Send me one with direct / some sunlight. I did mine with a shot on a cloudy day which I think it's the best the purpose. And if I could only choose between lowering or spacers, I would choose to do the spacers first. dolphin_4_u- I love your rims and was seriously considering it (still am!). And I think the blackout fog trims and kidney will work great on yours. Keep in mind that I only did the "rings" of the kindney (the chrome part) and keep the kidney grill in it's original color. I tried the all-black version and didn't like it. Good luck. |
just one word for your baby....gorgeous....
|
Quote:
And if you still wanna photochop feel free! I kinda wonder how gloss black would look with the silver ring? (definately would want something glossy about the wheels) |
looks UNBELIEVABLE!! only thing i would suggest is possibly upgrading the angel eyes to a true white, and maybe getting a nice tint on your windows. but wow, very different, very nice.
oh and maybe blackout/smoke your lights. head and tail. |
ledzepp41- I love the idea of tinting the windows, but unfortunately it's not legal here. At the moment I do like the OEM-like color AE, I might change it to white and smoke the lights when I get bored later :p:
weasel56- my photo-modding skill is not good enough to do glossy effect. But send me the high res of IMGP3769 and I can give it a try. |
What size are those wheels? I'm in love with them...

Ok.. the handles... reasons why I wanted to black them was I find the doors are pretty big and plain, needed something on the door to bring it together with the my two tone theme. However, I do agree with others that it might look cheap and reminds me of the older / lower end BMW.
So this is the trick / compromise that i did (notice I leave the end part of the handle in bodycolor). I think it meets what I want and it actually look kind of cool in real life with the different lighting. This is only black stickers and not painted yet. Let me know what do guys think? Attachment 32046 Attachment 32044 Attachment 32045 And before (photochop): Attachment 32048 |
I agree that from a distance they do look like lower end models but the lower end ones were plastic matt black, on a different note they do go with your theme. In the end it is you who has to like them, and if you ever paint them make sure they shine a little so that they don't look like the plastic ones.
|
I like the black handles they break it up a bit and echo your theme.
|
i also think the black handles go with your theme. do it!

rcapilli - they are 20x9.5" front, 20x10.5" back
To all, looks like the two-tone handles is the way to go. I'll leave the black stickers on and see how long they can last especially during the raining season. Getting the handles out is not going to be easy?! |
Actually getting the handles out is easier than you think sometimes.
|
Beautiful! I personally have a silver X5 with red interior and I've been wanting to do the exact same things, and my only concern is that the red seats would clash into the silver/black theme especially with the black door handles.
Although I'm all in with re-painting the black trim since it's a bit pale. Is that matt black? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost? And I'm due for a headlights switch because my OEM ones are dying and I want an excuse to get new angel eyes headlights not just modify it and add AE rings, where'd you get yours? Again, that's by far the best silver X5 I've seen here. |
i heard it is difficult to repaint the door handles. when i got hit and run they did not paint the door handles. i think he said it was because they come painted because they are plastic or something?? i don't know.. maybe someone can ellaborate.
|
We send them out to get painted quite often... never seen an issue.
|
dsm2925- Nothing much really. Except keeping it clean. My car is cleaned on daily basis ;)
Jedi Mind Trick- Thanks man. Wow... red interior? Can you show me a photo as I've never seen one? We are lucky that our car is suppose to be neutral in "color" (Silver / Black), so it should not clash with any color as long as you keep it to one. And you are even luckier because the taillights are already in RED, so I think your red interior should not be any problem. It even gives you more reason to paint the caliper red and monochrome all the roundels as well; I never paint the black trims, but I have the luxury of having it cleaned every morning. I paid only US$300 to spray the rims and US$100 to spray the kidney frame and fog trims; And I got my headlights thru a friend who ordered for me from DEPO. |

Looks like the price of the handle (#10) is not that bad (US$32 each). Cost of a good paint job will probably be about the same or more, and I don't have to take the car down for a couple of days. Question: 1) taking the handles out easy? Just remove the door panels and unscrew the handles? Any airbag risks? 2) what does "prime-coated" mean? Matt Black? same look as the black trims on the bumpers? 3) I hate the keyhole and I never use it anyway. And since mine is a RHD, can I use the part #14 for LHD and replace part #09 for RHD? Thanks man. Attachment 32081 |

Essam- know where I can find the pics? dvs- Thanks. And so is yours ;-) |

And to remove the handle, open the door and remove the plastic plug by the key hole on the inner side of the door. Then loosen the allen bolt to remove the lock cylinder. Pull the lock out. Then when you look in the hole you wil see a t-20 torx on the inner part of the handle... loosen that (should go in, not come out) then it is just a matter of pulling the handle out and turning it up to release the other side.
reverse that to re-install. |
weasel56- thanks man. will give it a go. Any idea if the "prime-coated" will look similar to the black trim on the bumpers and flares?
Essam- the red looks Red Hot! Can wait to see one on a Titan Silver X ;-) |
No idea... I never see them in the unpainted stage. But the paint just being a primer would not be durable anyways... You should get them painted the way youo want for the best quality. Also that allows you to choose flat black, semi gloss or full gloss.
|
Got it! If that's the case, there's no benefit to buy new handles so I'll probably just paint over my stock ones.
One last question, are the front / rear door handles the exactly same on one side (it seems so from the part numbers)? Quote:
|
I think so, and if the part #s are the same then you can bet on it.
|
waste of money. instead, put the money in jp morgan chase and see about a 30% return over the next year.

for the handles, I decided to:
1) buy the original black / plastic handles (those for the basic models), the cost was much cheaper than repainting my original handles! 2) keep the rear part of the handles in body color to create the two tone effect. Attachment 32280 I've also replaced the rear cover for the keyhole to a fully covered one for the cleaner look (this is the before photo, my X is RHD) Attachment 32279 I'm quite happy with the result. I know there have been a stack of questions regarding the wheels but i was wondering whether you had the wheels painted and then machined, or machined and then masked up and pained? Im hoping to do something similar with my wheels and the local paint guy said machine first but i would have thought the opposite
|
Sorry, what do you mean by "machined"?
|
By machining, I'm referring to how a metal worker might repair curb rash on a set of wheels. The wheel is rotated and a sharp instrument is used on the outer surface which refinishes it, kinda like a lathe.
Maybe I misunderstood and the wheels were not machined at all for the outer silver finish, just masked up and painted? |

Looks very mean................... |
OK, just seen a few comments further back to help me out - I have ordered 25mm spacers all-round so maybe Ive gone to wide for the front....... I was wondering how black rims would look and now Im sold on it so will be getting mine painted very soon, silver edge works well to....
|
ihvabmr - they are just a roll black vinyl sheets / stickers, that I cut as I stick and wrap to the bonnet.
amc1957 - 25mm for the front was a little to too much for my own taste, but may still look ok if you have the front wheel flares. I didn't like black rims until I photoshop'ed my E53, and was so happy that I really did after I saw the result of the real thing! So go for it! |
Thats a nice car! i love the 87s with the silver lip
