For the non functionning licence lights, open them. Big chances that you will find rust, dirt and corrosion in there. Clean, sand, lube with some grease, install new bulbs, and it should be ok. If you have a voltmeter, test to make sure you have voltage.

Very similar case with my X5 E53.
I found that the main cause of the problem was the deteriorated part#28 gasket. It was worned out and allowing water and dirt to deposit inside the trunklid grip assembly. Which in turn busted my light bulbs and jammed the opening system. I did the same solution as mentioned above and replaced the gasket. :p:

Solved my problem (kind of). Took the trim off and pulled it apart. Now this is quite difficult as the thing appears to have been melted together, presumably to seal it and keep the water out. So, on inspection, 2 of the 4 wires inside had worked loose. Result methinks, just solder them back on and bobs yer uncle. However, when i took the pcb out for easier access i found the back had corroded and the bus bars were completely gone for about 4 inches!!! So its goosed then! Bunch of arse.
Take note BMW. If you have 2 pieces of plastic and you need to join them together to keep them watertight. Dont melt them together!!!!!! Use a bit of rubber! It works for the rest of the bleeding car manufacturing world!

Tailgate issues-down button does not work

I just traded my wife's 2007 X5 3.0si for a new 2012 xdrive 50. I have the same issues. I can open the tailgate with either the remote or from inside the car, but it will not go down. It actually did it twice, but then has stopped totally.

My wife says no problem, but my feeling is for $74K it should work!
