RUST

Yes, rust. :explode:

My rear passenger door lip is rusting in a few spots. The lip is starting to peel away from the door across the bottom and parts of the side. This is not surface rust. It's from the inside out. There has never been any body work done, as far as I know. That is the only place that has any rust. The rest of the doors are perfect, as well as the tailgate. I know it's old, 2001, but there shouldn't be rust this bad. My 96 accord with 260k isn't rusting, neither is the 98 Jetta. I talked with a friend who does body work, and he suggested I get a new door instead of fixing it. He said it would be cheaper in the long run, and the issue wouldn't come back for a long time.

I've honestly never seen body rust on a BMW as you've described... maybe it's a northern thing? But I agree that replacing the door is the better fix.

What is the rust warranty?

I don't know for certain what the rust warranty is for a 2001 BMW, but it might just be 6 years/unlimited miles. Check your maintenance booklet for that info.

For model year 2004+ it was 6 years and then in June 2004 BMW extended it to 12 years, unlimited miles. See SIB 010504

My '04 is doing the same thing. It hasn't reached the outer door skin yet, just the inner edge near the plastic door panel. Only on one door - makes me wonder if it is previous damage.

My '05 is showing visible rust along the passenger door along the bottem lip. Will be taking it back to the dealer!

I have the smae rust in that location on my 01 X5.

It doesnt strecth as far as yours, but it is there..

Im not too worried though. Ill just use a rondell to clear it off. Prime, add a layer of glue to seal the door, and repaint it with the jet balck original color..

It'll last a loong time, and no one will ever see the paint difference in that area.

On mine it's on the right side back door.
