Biggest subwoofer ever installed in the X5 (maybe :)
2 Attachment(s)
I've installed the Deep Blue 12 Dual Subwoofer system powered by a Magnat Audio 800W RMS amp.
The factory installed subs are still in place, however with this one...I can rock the party :D The Deep Blue 12 has a 700W RMS/1400W max power featuring a proper wooden casis ( I hate plastic or other materials, they never provide the same sound) . Sensitivity is 93db with resonance frequency at 2Ohms. However, the Magnat amp is still not enough to push this sub to the limit, as its max power is somehow overhated. I suspect the amp has power losses at the end of its peak level . However, THE SOUND IS FANTASTIC! I can turn all the car alarms on the street on with the volume at around 70%. Played some tracks from "Rage against the machine"...it's like being on the stage :) Pics attached |
Cool... but you know what, i think for a car there is a limit to what is "normal"... i mean after a certain limit, louder doesn't give a better sound for those inside the car (unless you're going camps and your car is acting as the DJ)... not to mention the reduction in cargo area...

Awesome! I bet if you turn it up to 85% you'll be heard in Kentucky!

Hopefully you won't be hearing voices in between :P :P PS I hope with the volume upto 100% God will be hearing something. |
Looks good !!!
I take it that 'gabori' don't care much about the noise there huh? ;) |
Now I miss the days of overdone stereos.... I split the surrounds on 2 12" JL W7s with the 'ol rodek amp I put bigger coils in. (something to be said about a "300 watt rms amp" pushing 2 1000 watt subs out of their surrounds that threw people off!)

TOO MUCH. ONE SUB IS ADEQUATE...but hey I was young and dumb at a time just like you

In my former years, I had some 12" W6's with a Precision Power Amp in my Expedition. Loved to cruise in it, but when the music is off, the horrible rattles and panel shifts were unbearable. I was shaking the car apart. I could not do that to my X5 - although some have some small rattles (mine thankfully does not have any), driving around in the car that sounds like it's falling apart doesn't appeal to me anymore. But to the OP - as long as you keep the music up, keep rockin! |
Nothing like hearing a car going down the road so loud that the body panels are rattling.

LOL!!:iagree:w/Justin...
10 years ago I was running polk audio mids and highs all the way around with 2 JL 12" subs......all monster cable.....Alpine head...etc/etc/etc..... A competition sytem in one of my Vdubs...... Funny..now 10 years later I could care less about the stereo but love modding the Sh*t out of the X.... and I am deaf to boot!! Rich:thumbup: |

I hope you bolted them down.
In a crash, subwoofers in enclosures like that are one of the first things in the car to turn into a projectile. Lots of incidents around here with death by subwoofer (unrelated picture but you get the idea) |
Most of the people you are dealing with here are past and over with the head bangin' stage and could give a rats @$$ about the biggest subs you can install in your X. "THE SOUND IS FANTASTIC!"....I don't think so.
|
I'm mostly happy with the DSP's clarity and the 8" infinity in the BSW box... but want a bit more precise "hit" than the 8"er can do as I listen to some pretty brutal death metal most of the time and the 8" is too small to give that crisp kick drum sound.

although I wouldn't do it, I don't find OP post absurd on how he modified his X5 with subs. you can have an opinion, but don't generalize this board as being unaccepting of his decision. |

Ouch some harsh words for the OP. Why not give some goods tips to better his system rather than all the bashing. you guys are brutal some times...
It seems quite clear that many of us went through the head banging 130db systems back when we were younger. And I'll tell ya what, if I could guarantee a rattle-free systems without all the problems and headaches associated with aftermarket systems (without spending $10k+) I would do it again in our new X. Even my 2002 X5 had a kick-ass system in it and I loved it. Pics below show how I managed to get high-output, low distortion and still kept cargo abilities in my old X5. As many of you probobly know, with all forms of stereo systems and hi-fi gear, more is always better if you are in search of sonic excellence. Within reason, it is always better to have amplifiers with tons of dynamic headroom and loudspeakers that can handle more power than you are sending them. This way, each component is working well within it's comfort zone. So I say add two subs if you like and rock on!!! |
does the job

Not a fan.....I'm all for upgrading stereo systems but I think things should be in balance. I also prefer clean and stock looking installs as oppsoed to a big box and amp just thrown in the back.
Either way, your money, your X5 |

Ok here a good tip. Scale it back a bit

in the world don't need the excess found in 90% of the systems sold. Everyone has the choice to go the route they choose but let's not talk ourselves into thinking that a bunch of high powered amps and speakers are going to give you the best sound. Quote:

Thanks for the kind words and those wonderful PPI Art Series amplifiers were great. One was a 4-channel A404 and the other a 2-channel A600 that i bridged to a single channel. Amps were always stable even under a very low impedance. I still have both those amplifiers if anyone becomes interested. |

To your point, "more is not always better" I would agree. Maybe not always, but about 96% of the time more is better. With each component playing in a very comfortable operating range you will always have an improvement in sound. Whether or not that incremental improvement in output is important to you is up to debate. Saying some of the best systems in the world don't need the excess found in them is crazy. Audio is so incredibly subjective who's to say the marginal improvement of better gear isn't needed. Anyway I like your direction of "scale it back a bit"...often times people who will not actually care about the subtle differences between different gear can get carried away and overspend on a car stereo. Lastly, your final bit about high power amps and speakers not alwasy geiving you the best sonic result is dead on. A system is only as good as it's weakest link and total system design is critical for best results. OK sorry for the rant I miss car audio and my old system and had to vent and offer some help if i can. Good luck all! |
I did learn the hard way over the years to buy an amp that is more powerful than what I need and turn it down 1/2 way... that way it doesn't get hot, doesn't go in to protect mode, never gives a problem. I just want a bigger sub that can still fit stealth location but have more punch than an 8".
|
Excellent point. I personally wish BMW had mounted a 12" in that dedicated space rather than 2 8" woofers.

The key to any good sound is QUALITY not QUANTITY....for example....a 1000 watt amp with a high distortion ceiling....will sound like DOG SHIT....vs a 50 watt amp with a great power supply........It's CURRENT you want felas....not wattage!
|
Current = amperage = electric horsepower!

I agree that quality is MUCH more important than quantity. But you CANNOT tell the quality of an amp by simply looking at its power output capability. You have to look at its THD parameter at the rated power output! |

This is supposed to be a forum for EVERYONE not MOST of the people. In case you don't understand this, there is nothing more to say It's like saying this should be a forum for white-coloured BMW's and blue ones should be excluded. |
