Installing 4.8 Tips on 3.0
I bought the oem 4.8 tips from Center BMW (Van Nuys)..took it to a trusted local shop (California Muffler) and they told me the install would not work and/or the install would be too much of a risk..even if they did try the install they said it would be extremely difficult to keep the tips looking straight...when I asked a couple guys from Center BMW and Crevier they said the install would be no problem so I'm confused as to whether to return these tips and go for the whole replacement system or try another shop to install these although I trust California Muffler and what they say but at the same time I'm hoping their wrong....well any suggestions/tips would greatly be appreciate, thanks for your time!

I would try another shop, bcause I know you paid dearly for those OEM tips.I have a 4.4I and it had two tips on each side so the "SpotWelding" I guess was a bit easier to do.The installation of the tip "conversion" was done professionally for $150.00 and they look awsome.

Go to corner of San Vicente and La Brea ave., (before Pico Blvd) very good mufler shop they will do it for you and will take pic's for their records and display for other cusomers. Few years ago I've done my mufler there for MBZ ML320. Job was done in 10min, they are professionals.
They still there, I drive by this location every day to work and back. P.S. If you will go South on La Brea Ave., shop will be on the west side (right hand side)of La Brea Ave., (before Pico Blvd) if you will be going North on La Brea- shop will be on the left hand side (passed Pico Blvd). Good luck. |
I have a couple threads on this. A search should bring them up.
I put 4.8 tips on a 4.4. It cost $60 to install. I purchased the tips from Crevier for $118/each. THey look good. My threads have pics in them as well. |

You need to have a "Y"-piece done to go from you single exit pipe to twin pipes(like on the 4.4).Then you can have the 4.8 tip slide over and spot weld it.Just make sure they make a Y-piece with tubes that perfectly measure the inside of your 4.8 tip! They have to cut your exit pipe as close to the Muffler as possible to give you a good angle to weld the y-piece with your 4.8 tips.
It really is a straight forward job for any professional welder to do! I have sent you photos of what we normally do here when we want to convert single tips into quads, like on this 330 Diesel which we converted from twin exit pipes on the left, to twin exits on both sides .... |
I was there today and only saw big red color letters "MUFFLERS" on the wall U can not miss them, U will see them on approach to San Vicente, just look to the right, it's a plaza with several shops and bus stop, South west corner of La Brea and San Vicente blvd.
I'll be passing this place tomorrow morning, will try to check name for U. Good luck. |
