If you are replacing both Axles, that is a good price. I also would just replace the entire axle, instead of taking a chance of a new boot with an old axle. If you are replacing the entire axle, it comes with new boots, both inner and outer. You would not change boots and axles, since they come as a complete assembly. Your posts is a little confusing the way it is worded.

When I asked him about just changing the the outer boots, he mentioned about also changing the axles. I found that odd and just wanted to make sure it wasn't some type of unnecessary work, so I did a search on xoutpost... and most posters said that it's a better and a safer bet to also change the axles if you're going to change the boots. So I am having both outer boots changed and both axles. ;)

I think what butundo is trying to say is when you change an axle, new axle boots are attached already to that new axle. So If your mechanic is trying to act like its 2 different jobs, he is taking you for a ride.

Once the axle is replaced, there is no need for either the inner or outer boot to be replaced because all three will now be new: axle, and inner and outer boots.

Well when I gave him a call, I only asked for the boots to be changed. My mechanic then said the axles need to be changed too. You mentioning that the new axles will have the boots already attached could probably be what he's talking about.

Then again, having new axles and new boots for $300 dollars is a blessing. I read here that someone was quoted at the dealer for $600 just for the 1 outer boot to be replaced and I also called a reputed German Independent dealer in Brooklyn (you can kind of figure it out ;)) and they wanted $599 dollars for both left and right boots replaced, including parts and labor... and that's not even touching the axles. The mechanic that's fixing my axle's and boots is my indy mechanic. I just called around to get a feel of how much should be spent. Considering the boot is about $40 dollars, it's all the money that is being spent on the labor.

But thanks for clarifying that new axle's already come with new boots.
