Do NOT get locked out of your X5!
 

I bet I'll never do that again! I locked my whole life in my 06' X5 yesterday. Don't even know how I really locked to doors, but ALL of my keys were in the car. The dealer told me to keep the spare "near" my driving key so that the programming would re-take. My wallet key was still packed nicely in the owners manual. I was about five minutes from breaking the window (cheaper than towing it to the dealer to make a new key), but I decided to try Pop-A-Lock. I heard they could possibly open a BMW. without damage. The guy tried for 30 minutes, cycled the locks twice, but could not get in. After he left, I walked to the drivers door and lifted the handle and . . . it opened! He must have done everything right but just gave up too soon. I called him, paid him the additional $25 plus the trip charge and now have keys in three different places. Whew!

As I have posted several times, 7 1/2 years I took the little plastic key that came in the manual,
wrapped it in Saran Wrap, squished it into a little plastic bag, and tucked the "wrapped key" into
a little magnetic box.

I reached "up and under" and attached it to the top of a "level surface", under the car...I can reach
it with my 34" sleeve length arm, but the average bad guy is not gonna find it.

I pull it out once a year, unwrap it and "try" the key to make sure I can get in, and start the car.

Just a suggestion to prevent the "locked out" situ out there in ReaderVille.

interesting. you're using the valet key huh... need to get one of those made. wost case scenario i tell my brother in law where i am and he goes to my house and gets my spare and meets me lol. the family can take a cab home..

Thanks "motordavid", I just came home with a magnetic key box and will now search for a hiding place.

For about 20 years I've had a key hidden under every car that I owned (magnetic key box, taped, strapped...you name it). Funny but I never used any of them because I never lost or locked the key inside.

fourpointfour: I would give you a pointer on my "location", but you should be able to find a good one...
level, key box above, mag side down, sort of out of the air/spary stream.

Youry: I'm with you...all 3 cars and scoots, have hidden keys.
Like you, I've never been locked out of cars or m'cycles.

Very aware of the dangers of locking myself out. I've a certified BMW repair shop
and upon the enquiry if they could get me some "spare" keys i.e., the "Master" AND valet, they said here in K-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-i-a the factory and dealerships have it "all-locked-up" and you can only get the "extras" by going to the dealership and paying an outrageous amount of money for mentioned keys. Plus, there has been so much BMW theft from the illegal alien gangs operateing between Los Angeles and Mexico that you must carry with you not only car documentation but a driver license, copy of your birth certificate_OR a passport. But the big "stickler" for me is that I am retired so cannot splash hundreds and hundreds of dollars around (used to be from a low of $175.00 to $395.00) to get the keys. I just hold my breath every time I am out of town (away from my wife and her key). SCARY......!!
