Beware the MAF
How good can things get with these X5s, I am at the stage of shopping mine as I cant afford the repair bills.
Engine failure recently resulted in replacement of my MAF sensor by my local Repco Service Centre. The guys there did the right thing and installed a a non genine sensor @ $A400 because the BMW genuine part was $A880. The only problem in taking this solution was that only the sensor proper was exchanged the original intake trunking was reused. Big mistake within <100Km the fault returned resulting in the engine only just being capable of being started. Recheck of the price of the genuine BMW sensor complete with trunking confirmed price as $A880. Search on the web revealed I could land the part in Aus out of America for <$A300. Purchase acquired and installation in vehicle has resulted in the vehicle being repaired. Lesson I am imparting is that the sensor trunking contains a heating element that heats the incoming induction air flow, sensor measures the temperature of the air which is determined by the velocity of the air flowing thru the trunking heating element. If this heating element fails MAF sensor will not function. Therefore replace the unit as a complete component not the sensor only. Technology is great stuff aint it! Incidently supplier of the American sensor was "germanautosupply", cannot recommend their service and response time highly enough. Question is what will fail next week? Gravy |
