X5 asking for CODE on navigation. Won't Start
So first off, thank goodness I have my wife's car around now.
So today after cleaning up in the house i decided to go outside in the "is it about to rain?" weather and do some MODS. When I get the car up and running I'll start a new thread lol.. So I was putting my SMG paddle shift M wheel on the car and I decided to disconnect the battery this time since the last time i didnt and i ended up riding around with the airbag light. So tried to 'do it right' this time. Basically after reconnecting the battery and trying to start the car up - the alarm went off and the Nav screen had the code screen. When i did the nav retrofit i remember messing around with the code, and i remember what i set it to. Entered it in, not working. So any suggestions? I see the screen says: Emerg. Deact. Wait: 9:59 min I've had key in position 2 and waited the 10 min (set a timer on my storm). Tried starting the car - alarm. HELP!!! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3628/...e12055d5c5.jpg |
Did you try code 0000 ?

OK - I called BMW Assist and they connected me to a service manager even though my warranty is out and i dont have bmw assist. They do offer to help for $119 plus $20 towing fee if i need it. They did transfer me for free to a service manager though.
So the SM told me to put the key in position 2 and wait about an hr. My car is sitting in the driveway with the key in it. Hopefully no one takes it. :( |
disconnect the battery for 5 min ,
turn the ignition to position 1 and leave for 10 min, then start . cj |
OK will try that tomorrow. too cold right now. Thanks.
trinidad huh? i know its not cold down there.. must be nice. |
yes its Trinidad and Tobago nice ,
I hope you did not input the code more that 3 times , but i think this should work . cj |
umm where were you 3 hrs ago? Yes i did. What now? Do I have to find a way to bring it to dealer?
|
I think it should still work , the reason it did't work is, you had the switch in position 2.
good luck cj |
OK thanks. I specifically asked the BMW SM that when i called. Position 1 or 2.
I'd go try it again but i don't want to keep the neighbors annoyed with my alarm. |

Don't think that will be a problem... Sorry, couldn't resist. :D Let us know if it works out for you. |
Well sitting in car waiting. Should I try and crank or should code screen go away?
|
So no luck. Maybe tried too many times with the code. I've left it for an hr, i've left it for 10 min. haven't tried the code since unlplugging the battery.
Suggestions? Is my next step to dealer? Is the car in full antitheft mode and shut down? |
I am not seeing any instruction if you past 3 chances , you may have to visit the dealer .
if you disconnect the nav computer , i wonder if it will start ? cj |
hmmm Nav omputer? I just installed the TV module too - so i might still have video. Think the nav computer would have anything to do with it? I read (other bmw forums) that the code is coming from the computer, thats why car wont start. So not necessarily coming from radio.
I'll give it a try. Battery is dead now i think, monitor wasn't coming on earlier. I really don't want to have to tow this thing. Will the dealer send a rep with the computer? LOL |
hi , you input the code in the on board computer , that is also the radio tv screen etc .
I am thinking if you disconnect this computer , it cant send any signal to the ews and ecu , and your key is a good working key , it should start . cj |
Old BMW hidden secutiry system.....love to use is!
When all else fails...... If you are in lock out and dont recall the code...... To Reset: must leave car on key position 1 for 60 minutes then turn off try to restart. Some cars require key position 2 for 60 minutes. Good luck, |
tried this. Will try again tonight before i tow it to dealer on wed or thurs.
Battery died the last time i tried in position 1. lol. will put my trickle charge battery on it. |
Ok - key in position 1. My battery is dying though. So i'll have to get a new battery when i go to dealer. I don't want to trust the battery.
|
I'd disconnect the battery for about an hour, and have it charging while dissconnected. Once all internal capacitors are fully discharged it may forget the code memory... If when you hook it all back up it still asks for the code, just let the 15 minute timer on the screen time out and it may start then... hopefully :D
So who accidently hit the code button on the nav screen? |
ok - trying that now. LOL. I'm sure it's in full anti theft mode or something. All this leave for 60 min in key position 1/2 killed the batt..:D
no one accidentally hit the code button, I hit it on purpose lol. Next time RTFM. Live and learn i guess. |
apparently it was my cluster that needed to be reset. Hooked it up to the computer at my indie and reset computer. Seems like my sunroof is acting weird now - won't open, will open upwards (the vent position) but won't open back. The cover will go back, but will only go back 4 inches at a time. no more 1 touch etc.

default code is 0123
man I wish I would have read this earlier.... glad you got ur 4.8is restarted.... where in LI are you? |

The issue has been resolved. I left the key in ignition at position 1 for 60 minutes. Then removed the key, re-inserted it and started the car. It's all good now.
