How many miles does your 3.0 have?

Well I felt left out of the other thread because I didn't have a V8, so I decided to start one for the 3.0 guys.

Post your Mileage:

Oddly enough that is still technically within BMW specs, but I don't see any reason you should need that much oil... I would first question the cyclone valve (oil separator) as if the diaphram is old/cracking it can cause oil consumption. And if that is all good and properly operating I would pull a few spark plugs to see if she looks to be burning it off through combustion from another source.

'01 70k+ miles, 5 spd manual trans=high rpms on highway...

If I do 1500 of mostly "around town/around the county mtns/some highway runs, I usually need less
than a half qt in that mileage window.

If we do a run north to NJ/NY and back, about 1500+ miles of nearly all highway, I may need close to a qt.
I don't keep OCD type records, but I don't think my oil consumption has increased any over the past 20-30k miles, however.

And, the coolant "leak" has healed itself to just a few ounces every 2000-3000 miles.

I would doubt that many report "no/very little" oil consumption with medium-high mileage on the odo...

Is that healthy?:confused::yikes:

sfcl 06-06-2009 04:15 PM

I decided just to stick to BMW recommendation, lifetime oil. Nothing wrong for the moment, the tranny just works like when it was new (I didn't get it new but I know the previous owner). Hope it will continue...
I was tempted to change the oil a couple of times but I finally chickened reading the forums and all the guys breaking their gearbox sometimes after having changed the oil... Maybe mine is reliable as I live in the islands so no high speed runs. On the othern hand, many gear changes on our small and curvy roads and the weather is hot.

Aimster 06-06-2009 06:52 PM

I have 115,000 miles and I have the original oil in the tranny as well.

I have never heard of a transmission on a BMW X5 going out because of bad oil.

amacman 06-06-2009 07:38 PM

some owners put non original fluid in the transmission so i think that is why they have problems .
if people did a little research then they would know that you can`t mix the fluids so you must use correct fluid .
the transmission has a label affixed designating the part number for the appropriate fluid .

You right, however:
- First problem is that, unless you use a special "pressure" pump, you can't drain all the fluid, so a mix is unavoidable.
- Second, the preconized fliuid by BMW differs depending of the country/market! I can tell you that the fluid sold here by the BMW agent is all but similar to the fluid sold in Europe for example, different colour, smell, etc... And there is absolutely nothing on the bottle to indicate what fluid is exactly in it...

This is good to know! I have changed the oil/filter regularly, replaced the shocks with Bilsteins, replaced tie rods, lower control arms (front), and now sport slotted rotors with Mintex pads. Have replaced the thermostat 3 times; once I paid for it and then twice I did it, replaced the water pump and added a trailer hitch. Don't know what a valve cover gasket costs, but the instrument cluster can be repaired for $299 (see www.vdorepair.com), the tailgate rattle I repaired for $135, and the "ball joint" is relatively easy and inexpensive to repair (~$100). Assuming the ball joint referenced is a control arm - I did both the lower control arms for $225 and mine rides like new. Of course I needed a 4-wheel alignment to get it to ride staight. No OD on the old 5 spd manual...the newer 6 spd manual is slightly
overdriven, ratio-wise.

Those rpms were probably a tad higher than usual at that speed,
as I had pressed on the gas pedal lightly, passing someone.
But, yes the 5 spd = high rpms at highway speed. My Vette, pic
below, turns about 1600 rpms at 75 mph, thanks to 5th being OD
and 6th gear is way OD.
