or try and see who the dealer contracts with, and go to them directly (dealer marks up). my local bmw dealer contracts with a company called ColorAll .. they do a really good job.

Also depends on location - here is the bay area, paint work is expensive.
So an estimate may not be meaning for where you are, but if the other parts of your X5 is OK, you could do the hood and polish the rest - it will look good.

Here, any full paint job under 2-3k, will not look that good....

This is good advice that works with every car in every location. Ask luxury car dealers who does their work. Not that many dealers do body work any more (a hugely complex and expensive deal now), so they sub it out to shops that do a good job.

As for the cost, it depends on the color. If it is a solid color, say white, then they can just paint the hood. If the hood is badly chipped, then likely the tips of the fenders are, too. Maybe those could just be touched up.

If it is a metallic color, they will probably have to blend the paint into the fenders. That would mean removing the trim and lights if it is a quality job. In most places this would be a grand or two, but would not require a complete. Quality completes are really expensive now. Luckily, few cars require a complete paint job.

Modern good paint, and BMW uses that, doesn't fade (maybe the reds, but even those could be polished out just fine). There is no reason to paint an entire car because of fade or to match it.

Just had the entire front end done. Paint alone was $3000.
Remember the entire hood must be striped, re-primed,
wet sanded, painted, then wet sanded again, then clear coated.
The process is not cheap but it looks great.
