coolant is leaking
my coolant has been leaking like crazy. I jerry rigged it together, but still notice puddles under the car. i am freaking out, has any had this issue or any advice?

First guess: water pump...

I'd check to see you can see exactly where it's coming from with the engine running - if that doesn't work a pressure test would be the way to find the location. Just about any shop should be able to do a pressure test on the cooling system.
Here is a link to a water pump and thermostat replacement - http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...ement-diy.html Good luck |
Could also be the expansion tank split, but there are so many places that can posibly leak... You would need to localize the leak.
What do you have rigged on it? |

I love these DIY's. Is there a new link that has the pictures still available for this one? I'm getting nothing but blanks for the pictures saying the picture has been moved or is no longer available. thanks, MG |
Many possibilities for a leak. What engine do you have, 3 or 4.4? year? How many miles? That would give an indication of what could fail. From your post it sounds like the location of the leak is not obvious although I understand it leaks pretty bad. If it was the water pump or expansion tank you should be able to see where the leak is coming from when the engine is running. As X5rolls said you need to get your cooling system pressure tested to locate the leak.

take the bottom skid guard off and check to see where the green/blue residual is coming from. correct problem and remember to do a 60 40 coolant water mixture and bleed following the homepage specs

the engine is a 4.4. 115,000 miles. At first i thought it was a radiator leak, so i replaced the radiator, and in the process i broke the main hose that connects the coolant housing to i think the radiator (I am praying this new house will not affect the water pressure. I will post pictures to show you guys exactly what im talking about.
The puddle of the water is directly under the coolant housing, so I am beginning to think it is cracked. If so, does anyone know what the cost looks like for repairs, dealer vs. DIY? Thank you for all the replies, pictures should be up soon. |

coolant leak
Just had my 2001 X5 4.4 serviced for coolant leak as well. I had a pressure test done, which I recommend if you are having this problem. However, it turned out to be my expansion tank cap, which I replaced for about $28 bucks. I spoke to a BMW specialist and he said that it is common for the seal to go bad on the expansion tank cap. Hope this helps anyone having the same problem.
