SES Light and the Dealer

When I dropped the X at the dealer, I told the SA that the SES ligth was giong on and off for monthes, then it went ON and never was off since around 2 monthes...

The SA told me that they will download the european software (to the engine obviousely), saying that this will solve the issue.

The next day, he told me that it took 6 hours to download the software, that's why it took them long for the maintenance... i said ok!

When I took the X, i noticed that when you turn the key to position 2, the SES light does not do the routine check up (lighting for few seconds then turning off) instead it is gone for ever (as if the bulb was removed)... is that normal? can it be done through the software, is it turned off by GT1? what if something really happens and the SES doesn't come on?

I'm confused, what the hell did they do? and is it fishy? they took 65 USD for this software thing and turn the SES off!!

Thanks for your feedback!

Wow it sounds crazy but you may be right. Is there another authorized dealer near you? If you can, ask them. I have heard of used car dealerships and independent mechanics doing this but I never heard of an authorized BMW dealer doing such a thing.

Nop, only one dealer...

Wonder where are all the experts on the forum!!

It's important for me to know what the dealer did, so that i decide whether i should keep going to there or look for an independent mechanic (if it turns out that they are fooling me...)

I don't know the differences between the US software and EURO software... best question to ask at this point would be to one of our EURO members on whether or not their SES light does the check bulb lightup when key first on, or if that is just a US thing. Otherwise, what did the repair order say was done? Did they say anything about what faults were stored to begin with???

They removed the LED.
One of the US members found this out and after replacing the LED had a terrible time trying to get it to turn off as it had a constant code that refused to be rectified. Hence the LED was removed to sell the vehicle.

If the dealer really removed the LED, I'd report them to the big wigs at BMW... That is illegal and immoral.

I agree but I think the member bought privately and has since sold it on with a working light.

They did not tell me what the code was or what the reason was... the SA said that all american BMWs are sensible to fuel quality and have the light on when running on our fuel, so they put the european software to turn it off... :s

So yes, I need to know if european owners have the SES light check at start up or not. and can it be bypassed threw GT1 setting???
