Winter tyres

Just managed to get a set of 17" genuine BMW alloys off Ebay for £26!!! The plan is to boot them with winter tyres for travel to the alps. Anyone got any suggestions of brands or models to buy or avoid

Cheers

I've always heard great things about Nokian Hakkapellita series.

i have tried many winter tyres over the years , pirelli , vredestien , gislaved , dunlop , avon . i found avon to be the best , currently running avon ranger ice on x3 3.0i and it`s an excellent tyre even in summer it dives as well as with the previous michelin mxv4 .

the Nokians tend to be loud on dry pavement - am running Pirelli Scorpion Snow&Ice on my 17" rim set and found them to be quiet compared to most snows I've driven over the years - just remember to keep it under 100mph as all snow tires are 'H' rated

I wouldn't wring your hands too much on the winter tire selection...any of the top tier dunlops, pirelli scorpion, etc. etc. for the X5 on tire rack and the other web sites will serve you well.

I have run many different kinds over the years on FWD, RWD, and AWD and haven't really seen a noticeable difference for the three months so so that they are on the car each year.

I am running 17's Dunlop winters now on the X for the winter and they have been awesome...I go deep into Maine, Vermont into the unplowed stuff and they have never let me down.

Great price on the hot wheels by the way ;)
