Light stays on
 

Is this normal for a 2001 X5?

The light which illuminates the gear selections (P R N D M/S) is always on. When I take the key out of the ignition, everything turns off except that light.

Yes. I haven't checked it myself, but someone else noted that it seemed to go out after ~20 minutes.

mine stays on all the time (02 4.4) I can see it inside of my garage when its dark. The letters Park. Reverse and all of those stay on 24/7 at least on mine. I think its normal... unless i am wrong anyone??

Our 2001 is always on.

I have an '02 3.0i and mine stays on 24/7 also.............

on my 02 it is allways on too.

havent check my x, but my car does it//weird..i wonder why?

On my 2001 X5 (02/01) production, the light stays on after you turn off the car and lock the doors. After 20 minutes or so, it turns off. Now the kicker is, I have looked inside my car before unlocking it and the light is off. The second I hit "unlock" on the key, the gear selection light turns on again.

I remember reading a service bulletin about it at alldata. Unless it's crazily draining the battery, I'm not really going to care about it. It's an led, it's not gonna do that much harm.
