New Owner: A/C Question

I purchased a used X5, 2001 with 155k miles the other day. I have noticed (actually my wife noticed more) that the passenger side air vents are not blowing cold air like the drivers side. Can anyone think of what I can check to fix it? I assume that there are two evaporators since the X5 has independent air controls.

Could it be a problem with the air flaps?? Obviously it's no longer under warranty so taking it to the dealer is a but scary.

Thanks!!

Hi Ben,
Here is a thread that seems to be similar to your situ...that poster's fix is
a few posts down in the thread. Others will chime in with other possibilites
I am sure.

The ol'SearchTab, upper right corner, 3rd from the right, is pretty helpful, too.

A/c r134-a is possibly low. It is normal for ac to leak slowly over time. Maybe time for a recharge.

Are there two different sides to charge? Or one common charge? I had the R134 checked before I bought the X5 and it was actually a little over charged at the time according to the technician.

Ol'UncleMotor, I actually did do a search but didn't find that thread... Thanks for posting it though!!

I'll be calling an A/C repair shop tomorrow to see how cheap I can get things checked over.

Thanks!

Okay, had the charge checked and it was a tad low but the big thing is that my aux fan does not come on at all... I'm searching through the past posts to see what the best things to check are to see if it's the fan itself or a relay.

Thanks for any advice,

Do you mean the aux cooling fan in front of the radiator or the
HVAC blower fan?

Telnetanta 06-15-2009 06:57 PM

The one in front of the radiator. My inside fan blows air from the dash and it gets pretty cold when I am driving down the road for a while. I just want to test the fan somehow before ordering a new one as it is pretty expensive!!

Thanks,
Ben

The fan I'm talking about can be seen here:

RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 4.4i Pusher fan

I really would like to test it before replacing it! I have checked fuse #61 in the glove box and it's good. I guess I can check the connector to the relay thats mounted on the back of the fan next but the fan is PWM controlled so I can really only check voltage up to the fan.

Maybe it's time to dust off the old oscilloscope :)

This site has a fan that crosses to the OEM part number for a much better price. Anyone have experience??
