X5 Parking Brake Mechanism/ Assembly
I'm hoping some of you guys can helphttp://www.xoutpost.com/images/editor/smilie.gif
My hand brake wont stay up past 2 clicks unless I give a real tug and pull to the top. I have adjusted the cog behind wheel and cable tension from inside the car but nothing works. It seems to me that the teeth on the ratchet/ mechanism could be worn making the hand brake lever drop down. Is there any further adjustment I can do to the mechanism or do I need to replace the whole handbrake mechanism? To replace the mechanism do I have to remove the centre console? |
I have the same issue. No idea. Thinking of taking it to the dealer to fix it. Local shop wants to charge me $400-600 to replace the plate with teeth, saying lots of labor to remove the center console

I have the same problem 6 months after the last failure , was replaced by dealer under warranty , warranty expired but repair should be covered for 2 years but dealer told me to take a hike so I will need to replace myself .
easiest way is to remove driver seat and carpet panels on side of console just pop off . disconnect battery ground cable otherwise you will get airbag warning light after disconnecting seat wiring . much easier and faster way instead of removing the console .only 4 bolts fix seat . |
same problem, replaced under warranty

some photos and a wee write up would be good .
it may be put in the articles section . |

First correctly adjust the hand/parking brake and check whether that fixes the problem.
Center console has to come off for lever repair. Removing the front seats will make the job easier, but not necessary. I haven't posted all the TIS's for the center console removal. Let me know which ones you need and I will upload. |
someone on the UK forum did replacement by removing the seat and covers
unfortunately the site is down so no way to access info . |
