Dead battery & now dead keys.

I left my lights on for a couple hours yesterday and came out to a dead battery. A few months back, when I was replacing my interior trim, I had the doors open for a few hours and again, I had a dead battery. This time both of my keys will not operate the locks and alarm. Two questions:

1) Is it time for a new battery and if so does anybody have a favorite?
2) Can I reprogram my keys or does it need to go to the dealer?

I bought my X5 a few months ago and it's a 2006 CPO'ed 4.8. I'll assume the battery is original.

get new battery and reprogam your keys by turn on ignition and turn it off then press and hold the unlock button then pressing the lock button 3times and release all buttons you all set

turn ignition on and off five times....then press the unlock button and hold it while you press the lock button 3x

Thanks you two!! The first method worked on my older key, but not on my newer one. I'll try the second method on my newer key and see if that takes care of it.

You guys probably saved me a trip to the dealer

A jump and a slow charge has got me back up to speed, but I still think a new battery is probably in my future. I should probably start a new thread, but I wonder if anybody out there has a favorite brand?

my bat is original from 02. (4.4V8) the guy i bought the X off of had an FM transmitter wired incorrectly and would never shut off, constantly draining the batter and wearing the alternator, why i changed my alternator at 50K shortly after i bought it. i do carry a booster/jumper pack just in case;) something i've had since my off roading days with my ford pickup. (pickups)

Well, the newer key won't budge. I tried doing the second method, three different times and even tried doing the ignition on & off three times and nothing. The first method was tried again and no luck.

At least I have one operable key.
