Battery: How long does it last? (If it just sits in the parking lot)
 

Folks,

Due to a family emergency, I need to leave town immediately -- that means I will leave my car in the office garage for 5 weeks. I do not have time to get a trickle charger, nor do I think I can find a place to plug it in in the garage complex.

In your experience, will I definitely have a dead battery when I come back? I will have a Motorist Assistance, so I can get help on jump starting if the battery dies. How bad/damaging would that be in the long run? In general, what do you recommend? If I can find someone to just start the car every 2 weeks would that be enough? How long can the car last without starting?

Hard to predict, but I would not bet much that your batt. will turn car over,
upon your return. When you get home, get a jump from your MA, though
it may take more than a "jump", if the batt is stone dead. And, a "hot shot"
type jump may get it started, but your battery may be near terminal.

Once you get back, get it jumped, get it home, then try a trickle charge
to resuscitate it. I doubt there will be any real "damage" to your car
or its systems, even with a stone dead battery, imo.

"Starting" the car every couple weeks is not going to help, imo...
it would need a good higher rpm, longer drive to recharge.
Do what you have to do; the battery is fixable/replaceable...
I would not worry about it with other things on your plate.

Funny this thread hit today... I get a call from the little lady "the X will not start" She had lights, blinkers, radio, seats, locks, doors all worked...just no crank. one "click" and nada....

One quick stop to the local battery store, and 133 bucks lighter... the X5 is alive again. I do not know why BMW and VW batteries do this, just drop out with zero warning, sometimes while in-use.

OP: I think you will be fine for a few weeks.....go and have fun, don't worry. when your batteries time is up, it's up.
