Some 2004 X5 4.4i have the Aux fan, but some don't have it.
Due to my research, it seems to be an option on certain models/years.
And most of them seems to be found on 2004 X4 3.i) instead of 4.4i
But I do find aux fan for your 2004 X5 4.4i. (mine is a 2001 4.4i)
and I have the Aux fan in front of my radiator.

Thanks for confirming that some '04 4.4i's do & don't come with this AUX fan, but I don't understand why though... Unless cars being sold in colder climate region makes sense...

Hello I opened a new thread for this matter but figured this was a good place to post as well. I just finished replacing my condenser fan on a E53 3.0i. Thank you for the write ups as it was very helpful. It worked once or twice, but now the fan simply will not turn on. I am certain there is not an issue with the power getting tot he fan as when i plug/unplug it while the AC is on it will jolt the fan, however it simply will not turn on. I also have a check engine light on now so I'm going to try and find something to read the engine codes as perhaps that will tell me where the problem is. If anyone has any idea of what I can look for that would be great, I'm assuming some sort of sensor has gone bad or is not reporting correctly to the computer.

Okay just pulled the engine code and the coolant thermostat is faulty. Which isn't surprising as my heater never warmed up this winter. However I'm not sure that the coolant thermostat has anything to do with the aux fan whatsoever? I'm still going to go ahead and try to replace it, but is there anything else I should be looking for to get this aux fan to kick on? Thank you!

however I do not have any check engine soon light, but my auxiliay fan
has not been working in a while. I have conducted all my professional knowledge by sending separate power to the fan itself, but no luck.

I even tested to see if there's power coming from the head plug when A/C's on. And yes there's power coming through the head plug but fan is not working. However when I did your test, by unpluging and plug back the wires,it does a lttle (jump/jolt) like it was going to turn on, but did not not. At this point, I think we're both need a new fan.

I just replaced the fan it's brand new and it even worked a few times right after I replaced it! I don't understand. The only thing that could have gone wrong is a noticed right after I replaced the fan that it got stuck on the fan cover and so it was 'on' but not able to spin but I noticed this problem within a minute or two so I highly doubt the fan itself is fried especially after it worked once after I fixed that. This is totally driving me insane as from what I have read everywhere there is nothing whatsoever to control the fan in between the wiring and itself. There is however a 3rd wire on the power connecter that was messed up on mine but I fixed that also. I just need to know what other component if any could cause this. My wife is about to kill me.

This is exactly what I'm seeing. Question is does replacing the thermostat fix the issue? I know the thermostat was broke before this problem surfaced.

Question is now what does the black and green 'low voltage' looking wire do on the fan power connector. It's the smallest of the 3 wires. I think this is my problem. Also I can not get the fan to even attempt to spin now applying voltage directly to it but I believe that 3rd connecting wire has something to do with that.

Okay I'm talking about that smaller wire on the fan connecter. I can not get this fan to spin even directly connected to my battery like at ALL. However when I try directly connecting the fan to the battery, with that smaller black/green wire plugged into the terminal it will try and jolt it.
