Whats a reasonable price for painting black plastic parts?
 

Hi all,

I went to a body shop today and the first place said they will not paint the black plastic parts since the paint will not stick to it properly. He said it will have a fisheye effect since the plastic parts were not smooth. Not possible to make it look like the rest of the car.

Another place said $500 to paint it no problem but that place did not have a paint booth. It was a little shady.

Any ideas or does anyone know a good place in the NYC/NJ area?

BTW the reason I want to paint it is because I keep getting wax on it and its a pain to get it off.

I got all my plastic painted for $400. That was in addition to the $12K insurance paid them to fix the rest of the body after my accident, so I may have gotten a deal in that respect. Either way, they guaranteed the extra paint no to chip of flake.

I am considering just spray painting it myself.

Thinking of sanding, priming, sanding again then paint with 2 or 3 coats of flat black.

What do you guys think?

I think that flat black is going to absorb the wax residue just as much as the stock, if not more. Without the gloss, there's no seal so to speak to guard it. It would be like painting a window sill in your house with flat black, fingerprints and dirt would just cover it. Hence why they use glossy paints there to give a barrier and washability? IMO

I agree. Painting your ride in flat black would be as useful as a chocolate teapot. Must and has to be gloss, plus don't forget to get several coats of clear on top.
OP should shoot off a PM to 'Ekvals' and get a heads up on how and what was done re his new 'all over' paint job.
I've read somewhere that 2 primer coats are laid on to fill the rough surface of little craters and to smooth out the surface prior to sanding and final colour. GL
