I tried to put on some of those darkening foils and I was surprised how easy it was!
See pictures! |
Where did you get them from if i may ask? What is the process to installing these? I've been thinking about doing the same thing, but i have a 2001 3.0.
|
I got them on EBay; actually mine is a 2006 3.0.
BMW X5 TAIL LIGHT TINT 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001:eBay Motors (item 170340502875 end time Jul-03-09 21:10:30 PDT) |
Nice sinister look.... I love the vanity plates too!
|
has anyone else have experience with these tints? Any problems? etc.
|
I looks good, I wonder how this would look on a Titanium Silver X5

Too dark for my liking. I like a slight tint to the back lights, but no so much that it looks like it matches the paint. Contrast is a good thing.
Love the vanity plate though. |
Good job...
|
I just installed these last weekend on my X5 as well. Very easy, and looks great!

Looks great! I will be doing this to my black X5, thanks for the link.
Install was easy? What is the process like if you don't mind sharing, also, are you able to drive right away or does the tint need time to cure, etc? |
The film comes with good instructions.
Basically you clean the lens real good; then spray both, the lens and the film, with soapy water. Apply as per instructions, make sure you have a squeegee! I did it in the evening and left in the morning without problems. Oh, make sure it is warm outside when you apply it, this make the film much more flexible. |

Looks great, but the film for the outer light doesn't seem to cover the red portion entirely. It looks like some of the red near the clear (blinker) portion are still exposed?
|
just ordered mine! For $20, no harm - no foul.

Looks good on black...
Surprised that VA, home of no radar detectors, speed/revenue cops thick on the Interstates, 65 mph Interstate speed limit, and on and on, would allow them, inspection-wise. But, I like the look, on black. GL,mD |

OP's ballz; I like the look. Rule #9 is really open to interpertation, but... I was just wondering how a state like VA, with its rigorous approach to rural interstate speed limits, detector bans, etc., would let that rear taillight deal slide through. Hope the OP gets to keep them...I am a proponent of less rules & regs. GL,mD LIS > Administrative Code > 19VAC30-70-150 |

Mine just came in last night. I took a look at it. It came in a tube and there are 4 pieces of tint on a sheet of paper (all tail light shaped). Why is there 4? And btw... the instructions that came with it are not very helpful - at least imo. If someone can explain the steps (especially to avoid wrinkles, etc), that would be much aprpeciated.

Because your head lights are split into 2 sections. Look close, you will see. I had the same thought when I got them. Just open the hatch and you will see one part opens with it and one stays. I found the instructions easy to follow. Don't worry about wrinkles, as long as you spray the parts (light and both sides of the film) with a soapy solution (e.g. 1 spray bottle full of water with a few drops of dish soap) you can always reposition it. The film is actually really stretchy so it will fit around corners very well. Just make sure it is a warm day when you apply it. The warmer, the better. Make sure you have a small squeegee before you start. I had one from a previous project. Something like 3-4 inches wide works best. Mine came from the Hardwarestore; I bought a window film installer set (~$7-8) when I installed window film on one of the windows in my house. Make sure the lens is very clean. I used rubbing alcohol to clean it. Start at one corner and work your way down. To make sure you can stretch it, squeegee one or two inches of the film real good and then pull. It is unbelievable how good it holds on to the plastic lens. If you mess up, gentle pull it of, spray it again and place it. Good luck |
Thanks a lot for the detailed instruction. I feel more reassured i can do this without messing up! Will post pictures when finished!

Am I wrong or is there still a small line of red on the tail light that did not get covered by the tint??

From your pictures, I'm seeing a thin line of red between the blinker (clear portion) and the tint. Can you take a close up picture on that area?

illegal here in VA. The cops dont let these mods get away anymore. They actually follow you out of the shopping center and ticket you on the spot.

looks good, esp w/ the lights on
|
Sweeet! Did you just use regular window tint? Or something made for exterior??
It looks good, hows your light output though? |
bought it from Ebay, see post #3 for the link...
light output is decreased of course, but not much... i can always turn the fog lights on anyway.... i dont think the tint for the headlights will stay on, once i get bored of it, i can easily remove it.... |
cool thanks for the info.
