engine knock noise
hi everyone..just venting but i really am starting to hate this SAV..brought to dealer they heard noise and tech told me that he has never heard this noise before but it is not a lifter or valve noise..i guess that is the only good news...they replaced the valvetronic box on one side and it still makes noise..basically he said along with the shop foreman that it cant be fixed it is inherent to the motor it is normal ..bull****...they also said they started a 740i which has same motor and it made the same noise...bull again...all i know is that it did not make noise until 3 weeks ago so for it being normal is bull again....this is the first and last bmw i will ever buy..if it was leased i would not care one bit but i bought this crap and have to keep it for another year so i can break even...they are nice cars but not worth the headache...

Sorry to hear about your problems, just sell your car and run to the nearest lexus dealer. J/k

can you get a decent quality sound clip/video?
|
740 does not have valve tronic, so how can it be the same motor.

I believe that noise may be a result of a mixture of things... As it occurs when the idle is dropping to normal you have a few things happening. The ignition timing is being advanced until the point of ignition induced knock, then the knock sensors tell it what is too far and retards it back until it smooth out. The level of things electronically and mechanically adjusted on these engines for the power they have is pretty great, and will have some different characteristics than engines that don't have them.
I don't believe it is a sign of excess slack in any bearings, rods or wrist pins as that would be more constant and reproducible at other times. |
thanks weasel...what do you think needs to be changed or looked at...dealer replaced valvetrontic on the drivers side already....rob
|
What octane gas are you using?
|
i heard the vid , but on a laptop so sound not great but sounds similar to what my cars do and i have to agree with weasel which is sort of what i was thinking but didn`t know how to put into words .
|
i only use 93...something weird happened...i normally had used exxon..but exxon sold their outlets to gulf so i used gulf and swithched off with bp..then one day i was out and used shell and a day later noise developed..may be a coincidence or shell caused something to go wrong...rob

i need to note what fuel i`m using when my x does it`s worst cos it`s probably louder with inferior fuel .
|
Take your car back to the dealer and have them look at your valve again because it sound like your valve is ticking.
