New to site buying X5
Hello everybody .I'm Paul from Australia
First up great site took me a while to find it ,very glad I did looks like a very active community ,With lots of info. About to purchase a 2006 X5 4.4 sport pack with a few options on it ,Has 75k kms /46k miles . Taken it for a fairly good run can't find anything obviously wrong with it ,Very impressed with the power as i just sold a Ford Falcon 4lt inline 6 turbo producing 360kw wich was silly fast but the X5 certainly has plenty of poke. Been reading all I can over the last few days , Already picked up a lot of tips thanks. So I there anything I should be weary of with this model ,Build date 11/05 plated 2/06 . Couple of general Q's average life of brake pads ? Spark plugs ? I'm sure i will think of more lol Again great site I will be around a lot just can't know enough about cars |
pads and spark plugs are DIY, don't worry about them...
get it inspected by a dealer before you buy. |
thanks mate buying from what I've heard is one of the best BMW dealers in oz worthingtons ,justing waiting for them to produce service records for me , They say they have done a good check on it and replaced pads and tyres , tyres i can see of course ,just wondered about the pads , but yes done plenty of DIY on my other cars so pads no problem
Unfortantly doesn't qualify for the extended warranty as the previous owner was a long way from a BMW dealer and had it serviced locally i just want to see those service records before i sign up. It was bought from worthingtons and traded back there. comes with a statitury 3mnth warranty so hope fully any issue's i haven't found will come up before then |
Hi Paul,
Just had a look at my service records. Front and rear pads replaced at 48k miles by 1st owner. front pads and rotors only at 75k miles, also by 1st owner I replaced front and rear pads + rotors at 100k miles. (Mine's a stick-shift too so I use engine braking a lot. Drive about 75% highway, 25% city) Hope that helps! |
Make sure it hasn't been in any accidents, get a Pre-Purchase Inspection, carefully look at all records and service history, listen for any noises or squeaks, and make sure you tuck it in at night.
Maintenance isn't all that bad, most can be DIY if you have the tools but yes, parts are expensive and when they fail they it can add up. I have 150k miles and she's still running strong with no major problems. The car is stout, agile, and fun...just wish it was lighter. |
Welcome Mate...

Thanks guys ,it will be babied i can't help but spend money on cars it's an addiction .
What i was planning on doing is driving for a month and then take it to another BMW dealer for another report and if they find anything ,I can take it back and get it fixed up under the sales warranty (government regs over here all cars sold by dealers under 160k kms must come with 3 mnths full warranty ) took it for a run down a fairly corrugated dirt road on the test drive and couldn't pick up any noises ,. Very impressed by the way it handled gravel road and tried an emergency stop in the gravel it was fantastic . |

thanks cole
i did have my window but not the rears ,will try this on the drive i do before signing papers. I do have a few friends in the suspension business over hear that can help me with bushes etc. But would rather not have to do any thing straight away. ps my mother was born in south africa of english decent , went back recently and realy enjoyed her visit , hope to get there myself one day |
looks like a done deal, checked the history today ,had it's last 2 service done at 50k and oil brakes tyres done at 70k ,getting a free oil and filter change out of them before i pick it up , As i know there a good engine but would prefer oil changes more regular than 20k intervals.
got some Zaino goodies already waiting for it when it gets home , leather , rubber and paint treatment ,best way to get to know a new car i think giving it a damn good detail. Thanks for all the info on the site guys ,it makes such a difference when you know what your talking about and dealing with service dept's etc |
