Oil Change - Help Needed!
 

I went to a guy to get my 2004 X5 an oil change and he said it would be $120. Is that right? or what should I do? I looked up how to do it myself and it seems simple enough but will I be saving a lot of money doing that?

Any help you guys can give would be great!

That seems about right for an oil change at the dealership. If you don't want to do it yourself I would suggest calling around and finding a good Indy that will do it cheaper.

I would say if you do it yourself, you will probably see cost savings after the 1st change because you will be more efficient at it, already have the supplies and everything else. Just remember that you will also have to reset your Service Interval Lights as well.

You can do it yourself for about half the price, assuming you have the tools and some mechanical knowledge. If you don't have the tools, it will take a few oil changes to pay them off before you will be ahead. If you don't have the knowledge, please refer to the excellent phrase in the signature line of one of our members who works at a BMW dealership (Weasel):

"You think professional is expensive, just wait until you pay for amateur"

Right after my warranty expires I will be doing the changes myself as well. Seems very easy considering the oil filter is under the hood. If you get one of those tools that pump the oil out (not sure exactly what to call them) you won't even have to get under the car.

That BuckTwenty is about right at a dlr...maybe under a hundred at a good
indie. I'd pass on the JiffyLube type joints. As posted, an easy DIY, if one
has a little time and patience on the first go around, and you have that 36mm
socket for the oil filter cap, and the metric for the oil drain plug.

Be prepared for ~8 qts of hot oil pouring out of the drain hole; it will fill
a "drain pan" in a NY minute.

Otoh, an oil change, well done by someone else, is about a once a year
deal, so that may be worth it, time-wise, to you.
