Car lurches when you move off

Just bought a 2003 X5 and my wife and I love it:

However when we move away from a start it lurches a bit. It is a 5-speed manual. I was wondering if it was either something to do with the engine management system and it "learning" a driving style and is now confused with a new owner or maybe the VANOS seals on their way out. Having driven for over 23 years and never owned an automatic I know it is not a clutch control issue.

Any ideas?

I bought the best warranty I could with the car as my previous BMW experience was not the best and I am expecting to replace the VANOS seals anyway and the radiator (car has done 74,000 miles).
