X-Pipe question
 

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the advantages of using an x-pipe are over using just 2 x straight lengths of seperate pipe?

With an X pipe, the exhaust mixes the gas from different banks of the engine block, producing even gas flow to both pipes at a faster rate (as suppose to pulses of gas) Straight pipes will output gas unevenly due to the firing order of the cylinder blocks. So using an x pipe would be slightly more efficient.

With the removal of the resonators, the exhaust will naturally be louder. Using an x pipe will quiet down the exhuast system and produce a much smoother tone in comparison to just running straight pipes.

When I did mine, X-pipe didn't cross my mind and I went with straight pipe/small resonators. The sound from inside the cabin is good, but you can hear the exhaust pulses left/right/left/right from behind the truck. The x-pipe will smooth out the sound/tone from the exhaust and the equalization of exhaust pressures will help too.

So, basically it would even-out the pulses, smoothing out the flow-rate and soften the sound. This could be good then; I'm wanting to remove the big 7 AND A HALF KILO (EEK!), resonator to improve sound and remind me i'm driving a V8 (hehe, yeah i'm a big kid ;) ), but I don't want it to sound too raspy. But I'm hoping now that an x-pipe won't also detract too much of that "regained V8 music". Otherwise I'll then have to look into new mufflers too.

Hey Weasel, sorry I've not spoken (or even posted in a while) - currently out of work at the mo, so I've been sulking mostly lol.

Silly question - with your straight pipes, do you find it makes a 'raspy' noise after you've say blipped the throttle and let go? See, I don't mind it being a little harsh so long as it's not too rough.

When I did it I knew the straight pipes would more harsh/raspy than I wanted, so I put some 12" long 2.25" diameter resonators in there to keep the raspy-ness in check. Overall I am happy with it, but I wish I would have went with the x-pipe instead. Not only would it have been cheaper, but it would have sounded better as well.

I went 2 a local exhaust shop. (Meineke), told me they only had a 2.5 x pipe, and my pipes were smaller, so they suggested straight pipes,to mufflers. I decided against it. Anyone know where to get a smaller x pipe at, Ive tried searching online, but no luck!! I don't have alot of time to be searching, BUSY BUSY BUSY!!! Thanks!!
