Fitting that I get first reply!

I WANT MY MUFFLERS BACK! If I knew they sounded that good I might not have gotten the Dinan exhaust!

They look great, you are right they fit really well, your X looks like they came with them! Glad you are enjoying them! Don't push too much down on the gas though!

jst2878 07-16-2009 11:21 PM

how do you like the bridgestone tires tom?

JT. I love the bridgestone... So far i put 2k miles on them
I swapped out my old tires right after i came back from CT meet

jst2878 07-16-2009 11:30 PM

there definitely a great tire and a good price for a set of four. i dont remember the way your x sounded before but after the 4.8 muffler install it sounds great!

BMWLOVER 07-16-2009 11:34 PM

They are OEM 4.8is mufflers and its not like he re-badged his X5 to read 4.8is.

chilliwilli 07-17-2009 11:09 AM

Looks and sounds great Tom! You should get the 4.8iS heat protector trim:

HEAT PROTECTION LEFT - 51127010123 $14.19
HEAT PROTECTION RIGHT - 51127010124 $14.19

Tleong 07-17-2009 11:11 AM

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the exhaust + installation cost you? I am very interested in doing the same to my 3.0

mrbmwx5 07-17-2009 11:17 AM

i paid $250 for the exh +50 for installed

jburgos3 07-17-2009 11:18 AM

Here is an easy way to hunt down the 4.8/4.6is exhaust.... Keep an eye on your local BMW dealer and ask your SA guys to see if any of 4.6/4.8is owners upgrading the exhaust ...most likely you will get the good deal on them or even FREE if those guys dont wanna keep the old one.

dkl 07-17-2009 12:19 PM

Sounds great. Didn't know the lil 'ol 3.0 can sound that good  Is that with the stock resonator or x-pipe? That stock 4.8 exhaust appears to sound louder than my Remus on a 3.0 motor! Excellent mod!

I've called Life Quality BMW in Brooklyn and also Bay Diagnostics. The dealership said they do not do any after-market mods so they would not have them. Alan, at B.D. said all the owners take it with them and suggested I get in contact with a junk yard. :dunno:.

Any other advice is appreciated!

jsears 07-17-2009 01:12 PM

Other places I would keep an eye out is:

For Sale section of this forum.
For Sale section of other BMW forums.
Junkyards
Craigslist (I like using Google for this. Try your search term and then specify site:craigslist.org/pts that will search all of craigslist auto parts section for your search term).
It would look something like this:
Quote:

X5 exhaust site:craigslist.org/pts
Don't be afraid to search outside of your local area. To ship my 4.8is pipes to Tom, it was $80 and that was for shipping, packing, stuffing, etc.

Tleong 07-17-2009 03:20 PM

After calling many scrap yards, junk yards, etc. No one seems to be even carrying an X5. However, I did learn that NY shops cannot sell used mufflers?:dunno:

I'm taking a look on ebay, will an E70 4.8 muffler, fit my e53 3.0? There was one on ebay for $400...

mrbmwx5 07-17-2009 03:56 PM

the e70 exhaust will not fit on e53

that's because the 3.0 is amazing. I sold my 4.6is to get back into one. with suspension mods I can't imagine any SUV that can outhandle it, and I've driven most of the top of line german SUV's.

If you regularly drive from 80 to 150 the 4.6is may be more fun yea, but in day to day use the 3.0 is waaay more fun to me, so why not make it look incredible? 90% of the people on the street will not even know there were 3 e53 X5 models.

ZsX5o3 07-17-2009 08:52 PM

how you ever even driven a 3.0 sport?

E53is 07-17-2009 08:57 PM

yes , it was a loaner a while ago... when i got back i asked if i could trade my 4.6 for it but they said no

ZsX5o3 07-17-2009 09:19 PM

lol that's fine, I'm not saying it's faster. but you're talking about 115 extra horsepower at the cost of 300 pounds, and a completely different steering system. for pure handling (where the driving fun is for me) the 3.0 sport beats it. the 4.6is is fast in a straight line woopie but that thing is really all about looks.

sorry to bang on about it. it just urks me how many people think the 3.0 owners are people who couldn't afford the 4.4, 4.6, etc. they think it's impossible for the 3.0 to be better at anything. It's similar to the e39 community and I am always on the 530/528 side over there as well :p:

I think he meant 4.8is exhaust sounds different on 4.8is than on 3.0 or 4.4. I have the clips. Will only post if its ok with mrbmwx5, but not in this thread.

Okay dude...i understood your argument until the above steering, straight line & looks comment. Perhaps it didn't meet your demands and you had an unsatisfactory experience with your short lived 4.6iS but i've experienced otherwise. We sold our 3.0 sport not too long ago...the Mrs enjoyed it indeed but even she got hooked to the feel of the 4.6iS. The two don't even belong in the same sentence aside from the trim aesthetics.

The 4.6iS' steering may not be as refined as the 4.8iS but i would take a vehicle-speed sensing rack-and-pinion steering over an engine- speed sensing steering any day & night.

*Back to topic: Tom's X looks incredible as i got the privilege to see it in person at the last Tri-State meet. IMO, if it's badged as something it isn't then i can understand the debate. However, it's a well modded X5 with OEM trim and functional upgrades. It's not as if his mods are exclusive to the "iS" models.

E53is, i don't believe mrbmwx5 asked for opinions, he simply posted to share another of his many mods, which in turn and as usual, will inspire others. He wasn't soliciting feedback...If you don't like what you see, simply move on.

perhaps a reckless comment and I apologize. I'm still on the fence about the two and am having a hard time justifying the 4.6 beyond looks, particularly for me being the suede interior which I fell in love with. for day to day use I'm having a hard time finding the strong points of the 4/6.

also sorry for the thread hijack, I just wanted to stick up for the little 3.0 because I do love it.

BTW dont you all think that i can't afford the 4.4 ,4.6 or 4.8is becuase i have a 3.0i .LOL
I got this 3.0i way before most of you can afford the BMWs with 17k miles on the clock at the price of $23...k back in 12/2001

Great sound. Anyone in Australia that is thinking of uprading their exhaust on their 4.6/4.8 give me a yell. I would love to do the same for my 3.0. Nice work!! ;)

StartX5 11-02-2009 09:54 PM

Tom, i show my wife your video and she LOL:) - many X5ers in this forum look down 3.0i but frankly even though X5 w/ 3.0i less power than 4.4, 4.8 but it is better and last longer.
Also, X5 is just another car outthere, nothing can't be untoucheable nor mods. Keep it up.

i think these were just rear muffler sections + tips from the 4.8is, i see some welding going on in the last picture.

so my guess is not the whole exhaust, but if you do end up getting a whole one you can cut the cans out and put them on your 3.0.

Will it only change the sound or will it help with performance at all?

mrbmwx5 has put 4.8is mufflers(left and right), each of the muffler is list priced at $819.40(see link below). If you are buying these from dealer, it will cost you over $1600 +labor. You still will not have as good sound as you will with Eisenmann or Remus mufflers for less price. Unless you can get some used mufflers, its not worth it.

If anyone is curious about N62 4.4i installation from resonator back with full 4.8is mufflers, here is my pictorial.

Of course, this is much easier if you cut off right before the muffler cans and weld there. This wasn't cheap as LemansX5 suggests.

is there anyway i can change the muffler on my 3.0 without it costing a lot of money? and would just putting the 4.8 tips on change anything besides appearance?

fwiw, if you can find the 4.8is mufflers in a junk yard, it is the best money I have spent on my manual 3.0, smoothed the entire band and a nice quiet rumble, no blat whatsoever from a redline-drop-to-idle. 3.0 certainly -seems- to breathe better, and I was expecting no difference at all. The wife noticed it as well, asking if I had found better gasoline, lol. NOT hp, just smoother.

The exhaust that shoulda' coulda' been standard across the X5 line, IMHO - yes I appreciate my luck finding them here. To my knowledge and personal experience, no to sound, the beautiful tips are just that, eye candy, but I have not heard it without the tips. I have heard a 3.0 -with- pretty tips, no difference in sound, but its cat-back is hobbled in my opinion.
