Me and my Brother just finished with the custom exhaust on my 2002 x5 3.0. Let me know what you think

The backfiring sounds like it could be bad for your catalytic converters. What specifically did you do?

homey107 07-24-2009 12:30 PM

yes cats are still on. its illegal to take them off in Jersey

MPDano 07-24-2009 12:34 PM

That popping noise can destroy your cats then.

I have that sorta sound in my X5 can my cats be messed up?

j944 07-24-2009 02:52 PM

Would that be a result of the straight pipes? I am wanting to change my exhaust for something a bit more throaty myself.

MPDano 07-24-2009 04:09 PM

It sounds like small backfires and cat honeycombs don't like that. I am hoping an exhaust expert could confirm or deny this as I don't want to steer you in the wrong direction.

TheKingSim0n 07-24-2009 04:36 PM

:/ So lets just say for arguments sake that the cats are bad, what harm comes of driving with bad cats?

MPDano 07-24-2009 04:43 PM

Low or no power, no starts. Those Honeycombs start to break apart and start flowing downstream and clog and then ruin your nice Magnaflow or Flowmaster muffler(s). Cats themselves can melt inside and block flow. On other cars, you can remove the cats and put an X or Y Pipe but make sure you have a bung to plug in the O2 sensor. Smog time, put the cats back in.

i checked with a proffesional mechanic and he said that the cats will not be harmed with my setup
