Should I do it.... dump the X5 ?!?!?
 

Wife has a brand new Honda CRV. We don't really need two SAV's in the family. Of the two, the X5 3.0i is definitely much more expensive to run and maintain up here in Toronto Canada.......... land of the great white north. So I'm contemplating selling her............... although I'm hesitating. I've been through a lot with ole girl............... but.............. :dunno:

The other thing is I looked around at what they are fetching ........... on average for 145K km, they are priced at $16,800 CAN up here. :wow: These things are worthless.............. I mean a few repairs at the Stealership and the total bill is more then that. Ouch.

that is exactly why they are priced where they are - expensive to repair has a big impact on resale values as vehicles get older. But if you are willing to live with that, or can do much of the work yourself, you can get outstanding vehicles for pennies on the dollar. I just picked up a 4.6is for under 25% of the original MSRP and it looks and drives like a new one.

Two cars that do the same thing - get rid of one. Once you hit 100K miles (160K km), your buying audience is different and smaller

We have those two cars also, plus the VetteVert...the Vette isn't exactly a daily driver,
so the CR-V is the grocery getter and daily driver, if possible, while the X is trip car if we
are hauling lots of stuff or need more than 2 seats. I obviously "like" the X more; our '03 CR-V
has never been what I thought it would/could be, and it is starting to suggest some niggling repairs
at 6 yrs old and 66k miles.

We will keep both, until the CR-V pukes a bit more, and then replace that for the CEO. I plan to keep
the X for another couple three years, hoping that no major catastrophe lurks, repair-wise. New cars,
for us RetiredBums, are a considerable outlay, and not the trifling decision we had when we had 2 big
incomes rolling in over the transom.

I hear the OP on his dilemma...if the CR-V does what you need, then I would think tossing it now or,
more towards the GreatWhiteNorth "winter time" when the AWD has a marketable edge, might make sense
for you. Stables of vehicles are fun sort of, but a PIA...

Yeah, her CRV is brand new.................. all reviews point to them being pretty bullet proof now. But ultimately boring to drive and wouldn't want it on a LONG trip either. AND isn't as good on gas as I was expecting for a sewing machine four banger.

We'll see what happens............... something we're now considering.:cool:

Resale is definitely awful on the X5.

crv's are amazing and have great resale values... X can take a big toll on you after warranty expires- just depends on you if it is worth it

I agree that the CR-V resale value holds up pretty well, but having
one for the past 6+ years, I don't find anything "amazing" about them.

you didnt find anything amazing about them because there isnt any...

when i used the word amazing i meant about resale value- a lot of people buy them to export out of the us and drive prices up the walls

Now I see your point. What might be "amazing" is the 3rd world interior
and the so-so mpg.

Wish some "export guy" would come along with a crane and lift my wife's CR-V out of the driveway. :D
