What is causing this noise. Dealer is stumped...
 
Hi all,

My 03 X makes a clanking noise on the drivers side. Mainly happens when the wheel is turned to the left and going up the driveway.

The dealer has already changed both swaybar end links and I have changed both swaybar bushings.

Dealer says ignore it since the cheap stuff has been replaced and its going to be trial and error to find the actual problem. This will be expensive.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to figure the culprit?

Have someone walk along side the vehicle while you drive up the driveway (or the other way around). Perhaps you can narrow it down to a specific area where the sound is coming from. That would be a start at least.

check bushings on the lower control arm or the toe links. these are relatively easy to spot if you just went under w/ a flashlight.

Mine does the same thing when turning right into the driveway. My local mechanic inspected the front end and said everything looks fine. I am going to keep driving it until the noise gets worse

How many miles on it? Is it a clanking noise or more of a clicking noise? If it is a clicking noise when the tire is turned hard to one side it is most likely one of the CV joints. Find an empty level parking lot where you can drive in a circle in forward and reverse with window down and listen for a what I would describe as a clicking sound. It will be easy to figure out if it is the left or the right.

Another thing to look at if the mechanic did not already is inspect the rubber boots covering the CV joints. They may appear very clean and in tact but if one has a slit in it, it may have already lost grease and introduced water and dirt into the joint thus causing premature wear.

lol, you guys are crazy, you need a new wheel bearing, spindle and dust plate to correct this. seen tons of these go out

I was wondering wtf that clicking was, I would have thought that the ride would have been alot more fed up with a bad cv joint, god dam it more money I got to spend now. Can any body dig up and cv joint diy article pleaase

If it's the wheel bearing, you can test it fairly easily too. Go to an empty lot and do figure 8's. If the is whining sound and they change depending on where the car is on the figure 8, wheel bearing.
