out of the hundreds of water pumps ive replaced, the last time i saw an OE one that was plastic was on MY98 and before.

Good points. I guessed most people get confused between composite and plastic since both tend to look somewhat alike.

Does the lifetime warranty applies to the original part that came with the car? Or does it only applies to the replacement OEM part? I would also assumed that the lifetime warranty would only apply to the part that failed, and not the aftermath due to the failing part, right? For example, if the water pump failed and caused engine damage, BMW would only cover the water pump? I don't really see the advantage of the lifetime warranty on parts such as a water pump since most people would replace it as a maintenance item, rather than wait for a catastrophic failure to collect on its warranty.

plastic and composite are totally different. lifetime warranty only applies to replacement part. collateral damage is not covered. at around 60K miles, take out the water pump bring it to parts with your reciept, get a new one. done.

Thanks for the heads up. Didn't know that you can get a replacement part without show prove of it going bad. It's an excellent deal if one can get a free replacement every 60k miles or so

Welcome. As a 'future' X5 owner, I look forward to joining the fray as well. My deal on an '06 should be settled by 8/26/09 (tomorrow). I'll introduce myself then. In the meantime, good luck with your new vehicle!!
