Is the dealer trying to rip me off?

Yesterday I got a "service engine soon" light at 44K. I assumed I would get a inspection II out of it so I brought it in. They said it was just a check engine light and not a tune-up light. Then he went on saying, I'm not ready for a tune-up until 60K. How convienant I thought right after my warranty expires out...

There are a variety of reasons why your SES light would come on. You are early for an Inspection II seeing as you'er only at 44K miles. An important detail you left out is what their explanation for the SES light was. Did they have a legitimate reason for why it came on? :dunno:

I believe it is. There is no seperate "check engine" light. The only warning light along these lines is the SES light. (See Page 20 of the 2002 Owner's Manual.) It could be an indication of something as simple as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor.

"tune up" in cars these days, may be one of those terms falling out of the lexicon...
I dunno what exactly a "tune up" Is, anymore. Maybe plugs, fuel filter, (a bitch to get to for change), maybe trans/diff oil, brake fluid flush, coolant flush, air filter, oil&filter. A couple of "checks" and I would think that about covers it. A Stlr would rub his hands together seeing Biffy pull in with that "list" from her hubby, post-warranty, lol! I would tend to agree that a "tune up" by most definitions, is not needed at 44k.

Welcome to the world of "no maint", drive-the-hell-outta-the car for the warr. period/lease and give it back to the Stlr. Next is "lifetime" air fills eg nitrogen, in the tars, lol!
