Forget charging the battery, just get a new one, maybe that will help some of these problems.

No...its not a retrofit upgrade as DPF is ECu controlled! It either comes with it or not. Most LHd cars have it,but it seems that its not the case with Rhd!

Sounds normal; we are often ripped off in Britain when it comes to cars.

I think it can be retrofitted as under the catalytic converter section it says:

"Think of customer and environment;
retrofit diesel particulate filter
instead of exchange pre-catalytic
converter."

Several weeks ago i purchased an 06 X5 3.0 sport. From the second day I owned it i had the following issues -
1.) Interior fan made aweful grinding sound
2.) Airbag warning lights come off and on
3.) Rear door would not open
4.) Steering wheel lights did not work
5.) Dent on side of door that was obviously rusted and painted over ( my fault for not noticing)
Some of these issues were fixed, others of course they could not duplicate. We all know how that story always ends, back and forth back and forth.
Where my primary frustration comes from is the fact that this was a CPO car, apparently my expectations of BMW were too high.
To make the situation even better or worse depending on how you view it, I took this vehicle to another dealer and traded it in on another X5!
I lost a little on my trade but was able to work down the dealer about $4k on an 06 4.4is CPO with full original factory warranty into next summer. Has 4 brand new tires and was a local lease return. So far its like a completely different vehicle in terms of fit and finish and especially power. I dont even know how these two vehicles came from the same factory !!
To make a long story short i will probably drive this thing until a few months prior to the CPO expiring and sell it. I absolutely love the vehicle dont get me wrong but i have heard too many other horror stories about issues with these cars.
Am I psyching myself out worrying about the vehicle ? Should i expect trouble free operation?
Only time will tell unfortunately. Either way, i have owned two Hondas for a combined 220,000 plus miles without any issues so it will probably be back to either Honda or Toyota for me after this vehicle.

I cannot believe I finally found someone who has this exact same problem. The techs at the dealership couldn't hear it when we went for a ride. I don't understand how no one can hear it but me when I bring them for a ride. Its not even a subtle noise. Have you found out the solution to this yet. My tranny is pretty much shot as of two weaks ago. I bought some time with a fluid and filter change but now something is leaking everywhere. Doesn't look like tranny fluid.
I would describe the squeak to be a very very high pitched screech. It only makes this noise just above 3k rpms. Usually only when its about to shift to 4th, but I can duplicate it in manual so it doesn't seem like its related to shifting. I also noticed it faintly in other gears.
I am curious about this because my X has done this from the day when I bought it a year ago. It shifts smoothly, so I just ignored it.

"Squeak when gearbox changes from 3rd to 4th - new issue - I get a funny squeak when the auto box changes from 3rd to 4th. I've noticed this since the car was in to have the rear brakes and steering column bearings replaced. Doesn't always happen, loudness of the squeak seems to be related to level of acceleration. Can often be reproduced by going in to manual mode and accelerating briskly in 3rd, changing to 4th above 3k rpm. Will tell the dealer about this next time it's booked in."

Here is what my 2004 e53 x5 3.0d sport auto has

Coolant leak -did have it at first but now ok nothing done by me to fix it, just went

Washer reservoir cap missing - used one off a 5 series

Missing AUX heating remote - got a webasto unit in car but remote

Play felt through steering - me too

Lurch & Inappropriate downshift - . At low speed it will occasionally catapult in to the next gear which is very disconcerting when in slow moving traffic; had this 4 times in 10k of driving, just gonna live with it

.Missing running board rubbers - dam things seem to go missing on the drivers side where I get in/out. Glue them in with silicone next time jbf

Hiss from front shock - notice a hiss from front shock when going over speed bumps with the window open (slowly). I get this too

vanishing pixels on radio display centre console--fixed itself for now

Back LH tire on the inside is wearing heavily due to excessive camber (although camber is in factory spec) posters on here suggest bushings or swing arm or both.....rubbish for such a low mileage vehicle, tire was worn inside since I got it with the 29k miles on the clock......

I will keep you posted of any other issues, but the drive in the X5 wins hands down against my 1973 mercedes 220d,1978 audi 80,1983 mercedes 190e, saab 93,pegueot 306,and honda accord:rofl: reliability, both the mercs and honda were super.......

If there's an issue then I've probably got it, lol.

Battery dying has been sorted with a replacement battery, they replaced it with a different part, apparently an updated battery for use when AUX heater is fitted/enabled.

Parking sensors are much better, still go a bit mad if I leave them on for a while, e.g. random sporadic bursts of beeping or constant tone; but when I need them to park they do work.

Passenger mirror dip seemed to be fixed for the first few days but now the problem is back with vengeance.

Boot-lid interior lights still flicker.

TV picture still obscured by menu relics when AUX heating in use.

With regards to the 3rd-4th squeak, it's still there despite them having apparently replaced the drivers side torque drive whatever that is. Since I got it back I seem to get a lot more whining at low speed, perhaps under 20mph while accelerating gently - it's like a whimpering whine between 1500-2000rpm when the gearbox is thinking about changing.

A post on this forum suggested that the transmission fluid needs an additive and that there is a BMW tech bulletin on this but my dealers don't seem to have found it. Very concerned that there is some kind of rubbing/wear happening inside the gearbox, while it isn't causing anything to fail now it may over time mean the gearbox fails early so I want to get it resolved while under warranty.

Since I got the car back from the dealers I've noticed that the clicking in the steering has come back and sometimes I can feel and hear something in teh steering system rubbing. It feels like a metal/rubber contact and very slightly squeaks.

Will book it back in to the dealers soon - somebody drove in to the back of me in the snow, nothing serious but the rear bumper needs replacing. It's going in for that on Friday. On the plus side it wasn't my fault which means I get a nice new hire car for a week. Should be an E70, ML, RR Sport or Disco 3. Fingers crossed it's one of the Rovers as I'd like to compare them against the X5 for daily use.

I get the same squeak on my 3.0D... only under firm acceleration. Happens just before or during the gear change. I have the 6 speed ZF box. Been worriying me for some time... Be interested to see if anyone figures it out.

I just had my transmission rebuilt and a new torque converter put in and that squeal/squeak on the shift from 3rd to 4th can now be heard louder and in every gear now. I thought for sure it would have went away

JBF 03-12-2010 07:23 AM

Under warranty?

Apparently there's a transmission fluid additive that stops the squeal.
