2001 X5 4.4 transmission slipping in reverse.
Transmission place called today. My 2001 X5 4.4 is slipping in reverse. Forward there is no problems. Told me this is a common problem. Kit to fix the issue with a piston and cylinder, costs $480, plus $1500 in labor. Anyone heard of this problem and is this a reasonable?

My 2001 had the same problem a few months ago. BMW NA stepped up and gave me a free transmission. I just had to pay 2K for labor

Tell me more. How were you able to get a new transmission? Did you have an extended warranty? I have 90K on my X5. Does BMW warranty their transmissions for 100K like other manufacturers do?

Here is the failed F Clutch Piston Seal
http://members.shaw.ca/allbusiness/5...s/CIMG2879.JPG Note the rounded edges, these should be almost flat/sharp http://members.shaw.ca/allbusiness/5...s/CIMG2881.JPG This is what it should look like. http://members.shaw.ca/allbusiness/5...s/CIMG2882.JPG The inner seal is blown too. http://members.shaw.ca/allbusiness/5...s/CIMG2885.JPG http://members.shaw.ca/allbusiness/5...s/CIMG2886.JPG It caused the friction material in the F Clutch pack to wear and also warped the discs. The rest of the friction material was basically like new. http://members.shaw.ca/allbusiness/5...s/CIMG2888.JPG There is 176,000km on my 2001 4.4 X5 with the ZF Transmission, I've been pretty abusive to my vehicle and haven't babied the transmission much at all, other than changing the trans fluid... My car was 18 months out of warranty, and no I did' have an extended one. I showed the service manager the service history and he reached out to BMW NA on his own. Good getting it fixed - I know how stressed you must be
|
Great service manager. Hope I get one that is as generous.

Called BMW today. Told me that 18 months is the cut-off for service issues. BMW told me they won't repair any transmission. There service guys have never been trained to repair them, so only thing they do is replace them at $5500 plus labor. What a joke....
|
BMWNA doesn't want dealers rebuilding any engines, transmissions, transfer cases, etc. Just replacing them. I think it's a liability issue. I know this because I offered to be a rebuild guy for all the above mentioned items at my dealer and was declined by the service manager for that reason.
