Got my 20" snows ready to go.........
 

Before anyone posts about how stupid 20" snows are I just want to say that it is something I wanted to do stupid or not. :dunno:
Since I had my stock 20's sitting in my basement and Pirelli makes 275/40/20 Scorpion Ice and Snow, I figured what the hell. I purchased 2 replica front Style 87's and mounted the snows on 4 front rims. I test fitted the stock front rim to see if it would work on the rear before the purchase and voila, it did. I live in NY and don't get buried in snow and if we do, I will either stay home or see if I can get stuck!! I hate going from chrome 20's to alloy 18's with balloon tires for 4-5 months of the year. I do go to VT to ski but still, 18's are overkill in my opinion. Yes, the potholes are of some concern but that is why you buy the Road Hazard program from TireRack. The rolling diameter going from 315/30/20 to 275/40/20 is .001% off, so there is no difference. All in all, I can't wait to try these things out and if they work just as well as the 18's, then I will be very happy with my decision. If they don't, well, I still have the 18's but I don't think I will have any problems.
They won't be going on for another month or so depending on weather but I will keep the board updated on how they do and if everything is fine, I am sure some of you will convert next winter.

Wow! I bought the Pirelli Scorpions last year and the biggest winter tire I could get in any brand was 18". I don't regret it at all though. They give me a great sense of security and have never failed to provide traction...and we get a lot of snow and ice here! :thumbup:

I suppose someone had to try it - good luck - I'm sure there are a few of us anxious to discover if it will work - that's why they call it a crapshoot - you lay out your money and roll the dice

Based on my experiences doing something similar (on a different vehicle), the 20" winter tires will certainly perform better than the 20" performance rubber, but will not perform nearly as well as winter tires on 17" or 18" wheels. The wide footprint will tend to float rather than dig for traction, and the lack of sidewall flexibility reduces the ability of the sipes and shoulder blocks to do their job. The difference is quite surprising. Regardless, it's way better than doing nothing...

I was using 265's with my Dunlop M2's so I am only going 10mm wider. As for the stiff sidewall, I could always reduce the pressure a few psi. I guess I won't know until I try it and I will not be driving in the Antarctic tundra. I think it will be fine :dunno:
