If insurance will only pay $60 or so, I also suggest doing it out of pocket (chances are, you can get that taken care of for less than what they quoted for insurance purposes.)

On a side note, (mostly saying this for other people who might be reading this later, ) check with your insurance company and see how much more it would be to change the windshield coverage to $100 deductible, while keeping other (collision, etc.) at $500. Given the crap that is flying all over the place these days on freeways, etc., it may be well worth paying a bit more to bring down your deductible on glass to $100.

Just had the windshield replace on my 06 X5. The BMW store wanted $1,700 and the insurance company wanted to have it replaced by their in-house glass company with after market glass. We went round and round for a couple of weeks and my agent got involved and worked out a compromise. OEM glass replaced at a glass shop of my choice. I think the windshield cost around $650 and the whole job with trim was just under $1,000. I paid the $500 deductible. I choose a local shop that I had used before and was pleased with the quality of work.

Just a note of caution. The X5 has rubber spaces on the bottom and sides of the windshield that are usually destroyed when the windshield is removed. Stop by the dealer and get the spacer pack because the windshield shop won’t have them. The guys who came to do my job were great. Perfect install including putting primer on all metal surfaces where the windshield mounts to the car. So far the light sensor seems to work but it has yet to rain, so I don’t know about the rain sensor.

If you had full glass ($0 ded) then i would use it, but with a $500 ded pay it out of pocket!
just trying to help you out!

Unfortunately by contacting the insurance company regarding the windshield a claim May have already been logged. At this point it doesn't matter whether you receive any money for your claim. The fact that you opened a claim will remain on your insurance record and have the same impact as if you received reimbursement. :(

I paid $ 350 CAD + 13% tax for an aftermarket one because I asked my mechanic shop to deal with it,so I guess it was some kind of discount otherwise I was quoted at local BMW for something around $1000 CAD and speedy autoglass $650 tax and labor included,
So finally it was replaced by Speedy for much less, obviously there's no BMW badge on the windshield, but it's a rain sensor compatible one,so I don't givva s... It works just perfect.
