X5 Self braking
 

Has anyone experienced the X5 trying to brake itself at low speed. Whilst in slow moving traffic the car decided to start applying the brakes itself and I could feel the ABS kicking in. Felt identical to using the DSC. I stopped the car switched everything off and restarted but it continued self braking until I applied the brakes when the ABS kicked in and I now have DSC, ABS and a yellow caution light on the dash.

Any ideas? Faulty DSC unit or just an ABS sensor gone??

It might be HDC misbehaving... braking tiself at low speed sounds like HDC activated by its own...

It could be a sensor gone bad.
As you now have warning lights on there will be fault codes stored. It will be worth taking the car to get the codes read - that will tell you what is causing the problem.

In a case like this I would bring it in to the dealer. Needs to go somewhere that has the equipment to communicate with the DSC module and perform any tests related to this problem.

Do you know where the DSC control unit is located?

kinda tucked down behind the left side headlight on US spec X5s.

OK a friend has plugged a BMW Scanner 1.36 into it and read the ABS/DSC codes as:
Dec 6
Hex 0006
dec/hex 255/FF

Does anyone know what these equate to in BMW "P" error codes?
He also cleared the codes and as soon as the car moves the DSC light starts flashing and the brakes apply on random wheels.

The code reader should have come with some kinda translation book, those codes mean nothing to me... :dunno:

I'd find a shop with the GT1 tester or bring it to the dealer as this may either end up being a DSC control module or a wiring issue. Either way would need proper diagnosis before spending money on unneeded parts.

It turns out that error code 6 is "right front wheel sensor inplausible reading" replaced the sensor and everything is now back to normal. Also detected both Pre CAT O2 sensors had failed....

Ok, the wheel speed sensor sounds like it fixed the braking problem. But what were the exact codes with the O2 sensors?

I ask because 9 times of 10 the faults are for lean mixture or rich mixture read by the O2 sensors, not a problem with the sensors itself....
