Issue is getting worse. I guess I'll have to take it back to the stealership one more time .............. and see if they find anything new. Brutal.

Engine? Year? Mileage? Member amacman mentioned torque converter...from the sound of the symptoms that would be my guess. A faulty torque converter can induce issues with the trany.

Engine : 3.0i
Year : 2002

***UPDATE***

Ok, so someone else posted this up on one of the other forums I hang out on. It kinda hits the nail on the head and I think I'm narrowing this down.

Quote:

Sounds like some play in the drive line, such as in a half-shaft or something like that. It could be in any part. You have no noise when there is no load between the tranny and wheels, or if you load it up by putting on the brakes. Is the sound usually gone when accelerating? I bet it is. It probably is worse when just driving around with light load on the drive line. Is that correct?
The ticking does disappear under heavier acceleration and it's definitely worse under light load. So this guy is definitely on the right path.

Has anyone here had any play in their driveline ????

should know more on Wednesday when the X5 goes in

replaced front left axle shaft and the ticking got much worse. Mechanic drove around in the p. lot with the hood up laying over the engine bay and noted the noise travelling up the frame rails. Tonite he's going to disconnect the front drive shaft and start breaking this down bit by bit to help resolve the issue. But he's puzzled and has no real answers at this time................. which is bad for me. :(

That would have been funny to see. I am having this ticking noise as well as of recently.

I have a 02 4.6 70,000

I only hear the ticking when I am in gear at a stop. Put in in neutral and sound goes away. Give a little gas and noise goes away. Just started a week or so ago so I haven't looked into anything. Hoping it goes away on its own. :D

I am interested in hearing the outcome on this so keep us posted.

Any result to taking it into the shop Tom?

Tominizer 10-17-2009 09:27 AM

Yes............... it's been a frustration............ almost 2 days and he had nothing. Long story short..............just as I was going to leave the shop doomed, we decided to unplug the DSC controller that resides on the left front frame rail. BLAM. No more ticking. Then in looking at REALOEM.com, you'll note that there's a rebuild kit for the DSC controller for $1400 USD. So at last, we've narrowed the problem down.

However, it did not get repaired. The X5 got sold prior to the repair being made as the new owner was in a rush. They said nothing about it. Then again, they got a $70K CAN vehicle for $15.5K CAN that outside of that tick and a slight buzz in one of the speakers is in MINT condition.

Driving home last nite without the X5 and late into the night I was pondering whether I made a mistake in selling her. We had her since new and she was also the corner stone of our family outings. She saw pretty much the birth of both of our kids and many many adventures. I was surprised how attached I was once she's gone. I'm kinda bummer out about it............. but it was time for us to have moved on.

So what did we get........... a nicely loaded 2008 Mini Cooper S Clubman with 20K km on it for a great deal. So it's a HUGE change.......... but maintenance and operational costs will be WAY down. And she's a stick.......... which will likely get me tickets. She's black with silver stripes and will look nice beside my 1988 E30 M3 that's black on black. But I still have pangs today from dumping the X5. Can't believe she's gone......... can't believe I feel that strongly about her. I think I need help !!! :(
