20's vs 19's...

I'm really leaning toward 20's (over 19's) for the Spring, so I thought I'd put the question out there...
Has anyone ever damaged a good quality 20" wheel mounted on their X5?
I know 20's get pretty low aspect ratio tires, but there's actually still a fair amount of sidewall height. So I'm hoping they're still safe to run on the much-neglected NYC-metro area roads...

I think the factory 20s are pretty stout wheels. They will hold up as well as the 19s.

you dont say if your 20´s are oem!I have good quality 20" replicas and the oem 19" sportpackage wheels.
In my case I would have to say that the 19´s are more confortable and will be better on neglected roads due to the higher sidewall height.I drive on a mixture of road surfaces and in 20,000 miles the 19´s have never needed to be recalibrated, the 20´s however, have already been recalibrated after only 3000 miles!!!!.....

I love my 20's the only damage they gave me was the 420 a tire for the rear of the car.

I'm probably going for the OEM #87 20's... but I've also seen a set of replica #87's in 19". And I also like the OEM #132 19's. :dunno:

What do you mean by 'recalibrated'? Do you mean realigned?

if NY is anything like Chicago, any low profile wheel will get scratched up (especially with the low aspect tires).

i can tell you that i haven't had a problem (yet) with large potholes, but I did on my 19" (rim bent and sidewall ballooned out). my fault though.

its a pretty expensive proposition in maintenance or replacement. i'd be very careful!

You bent a 19??! Wow, that must have been some bump... 19's have quite a bit of sidewall. Was the tire underinflated, by chance?

I'm not too worried about scratching (as I'm pretty carefull with parallel parking against curbs, etc) I just don't want to be destroying wheels over unavoidable potholes.

 I uprade from 19 to 20's OEM, they are holding up pretty well.Just park far away from the curbside!

AutoXer 10-29-2005 09:20 PM

I agree. Just part far from the curb.

DinanX5 10-29-2005 11:55 PM

So no pothole-damaged OEM (or high quality replica) 20's to report from X5world??
