Lets Talk About Tints...

I have the default dealer tints on my X5 but i want to get my entire X tinted. When I say "Entire X" I mean all 4 door windows and the windshield. I was wondering what is the price range to get that job done and if someone can help me Id like to hear some opinions on whats the best % tints (Darkness) one should get throughout the entire X?

Example:

Windshield: %10
4 Windows: % 50

Thanks!

I did the following to duplicate the factory look of the rear windows. Looks great!

Windshield: %10
4 Windows: % 35

If by "windshield", you mean the front windshield, keep in mind that is illegal in many states. You will get keep getting ticketed until you wind up having to take the X back and getting the tint removed. Don't say I didn't warn ya!
As for the 4 side windows and rear window, 50% is too light. I think 20% is optimal. Gives a nice dark look without going overboard (5% is limo tint).

How do you remove all tints? Would you have to replace the factory glass?

NOVAX5 09-30-2009 03:33 PM

10% on windshield? You're kidding right? 5% is limo tint and you put 10% on windshield? upgrade your insurance if you do get 10% on windshield.

Yes it is illegal to tint the windshield...however 50% on it is not that noticeable when u have the rest at 35% or lower...I've had it done on my 1st car a 96 Passat, and had no problem with law enforcement...

More opinions ?

10% is waaay too dark for the front windshield. The best results would be 15-20% on the windows, and usually 50% on the windshield is dark enough, but if you really want it dark I'd go no more than 35%. In the "X5 pics" link in my sig you may get a feel for the 15% tint on the windows, but I didn't tint my windshield.

if you're not worried about tickets, do 5% all around (4 windows + back windshield) and 35% front window. That'll sure to turn heads....

too bad there are so many he can get before he won't be able to drive his car...

You really don't need more than 50% tint on the windshield if you have the rest of the windows already tinted ... 35% or darker...thats just pushing it.

Summers were cool enough inside the car...and plenty of privacy :)

I think you should look up the state you're in because each state has different laws pertaining to tints. Additionally, also if you're worried about tickets. For example, in NYC, the limit for front window tints is 70%.... ie: no tint at all. However, many people disregard this law, but they can get a ticket.

When it comes to the front windshield it might be a diff. story then the front driver or passenger window...If you have to appear before a judge at any given time, u will have no choice but to obey

I wasn't even talking about the front windshield. IMO, tinting your windshield is just moronic... why take away your own visibility?... :stickpoke

I have 20% on the front two windows and 35% over the rear factory tint to match.

It looks perfect, not too dark and "gangster," just classy.

NOTE: at night there is definitely a visibility issue if you are driving on a street/ parking lot with limited lighting. I have to be very careful at times to make sure no one is about to cross the street while im turning etc.

I would not even think about tinting the windshield under 50%

Keep in mind depending on your interior, sunroof (shutter open/closed) and whether you tint the windshield the tint may differ in darkness and visibility will be increased/ reduced accordingly.

darkside4.8 10-01-2009 09:17 AM

if you have a dark interior everything will come off looking a little darker.
i have 35% over the factory rear windows, 15% on the front two, nothing on the windshield. it looks even and you can only see a silouette through them even on a sunny day.
also, shut your sunroof cover to block out more light.
don't do the windshield.
expect to pay a minimum 250 for all the windows, more for the windshield
