JVZ: I feel your pain. My fourth window regulator went out on Thursday night. I have hitched rides to work the last couple of days because I haven't been able to get to the dealer and I can't leave the X5 with a window completely down, not where I work and park.

To add insult to injury, Hootie and the Blowfish were riding in the X with me late Saturday night/early Sunday morning on the way to an all-night diner when it happened. We had just wrapped up our annual "Bosom Ball" concert- our breast cancer fund raiser show.

That is total BS...

If it were cross treaded it would have leaked. I agree with other posts here that the tech likely stripped out the bolt. I also agree with you that it should be able to be retapped....they are trying to generate revenue. Ya know it used to be everything that you wanted there was $100 bucks....their new number is $500...every thing is freaking $500.00 No inflatin my azz......

Not to mention they know that they have you over a barrel...the pan is out...it is stripped, it is not like you can pick it up and go an get a second a opinion. If I were you. I would pick up the phone and it a cold calculated manner tell that service writter that under no circumstances was that thing stripped before you dropped it off and that you will write the BBB, the local news, the president of the company and post what happened to you on every Bimmer board on the net....

Bet you he will retapp it.

The tech may have cross threaded the drain plug, which may be more likely than stripping it. Rather than admitting it, the tech could eliminate his blame by calling it stripped. I'd ask to closely examine the "stripped" pan.

The only problem JVZ104 faces here according to his thread is he did his last oil change!! The dealer could then blame him for stripping it!!

I can't argue that it may have been my ham-handedness that was at fault, but a new oil pan? Come ON! I got a kinda sorta resolution today:

I spoke with the tech today and asked him for his reason for not retapping it or finding another solution besides the $190 part and 3 hours labor. The agreement we came to was to put a helicoil in it. 2.5 hours labor, and she's back together again. Noticed another problem as I was looking at the helicoil install today- the passenger side outer CV boot is torn open and it may also need a replacement axle. Eff! The X is getting an extended hospital stay and I am stompin through the streets of your nation's capital in an '05 F-150 crew cab.

Two things I wanna point out to anyone reading this thread-
1)the value of an extended warranty...will save me about $1000 on the window regulator/CV boot/axle job. I have a $75 deductible to pay for the visit and $25 per hour labor.

2)see Drex's earlier post about the drain plug. Torque needs to be backed off to account for lubricity if you do the oil change as a DIY.

Hopefully I'll turn in the FixOrRepairDaily tomorrow afternoon or Saturday morning and get the 4.4 back.
