Wheel shake while braking
 

I recently noticed wheel shake when i tap brakes to slow down from about 85 mph but does not have the shake from 65 mph and below. i have not tried braking hard from high speed run since those times i had to tap brakes was just to slow down a bit.
Dealer replaced pads/drum as warranty work around 36k miles and i had put in about 6k miles now but i don't see the problem as result of brake job since braking is good during slower speed braking. I also don't feel any vibration at any speed so i don't think its wheel balance problem.
Has anyone had this problem ?

the most common cause is warped rotors...

have that checked out by the dealer.. hopefully a warranty item..

Worped Rotors. I have the same issue on my winter beater, 1999 Chryslewr Intrepid .

I always thought warped rotors would have same problem at any speed ? I only get the shake around 85 to around 70 mph,,,

Correct. It is more likely that the brake application at that speed is setting off the vibration, essentially caused by something loose in the steering (tie rod end, or something similar). Unbalanced wheels can make it worse. A warped rotor will cause a pulsation in the pedal, and it will be evident at walking speed.

thrust arm bushings to be the culprit. if they are broken then you will have these side effects like shaking wheel

i have exact same problem. when my x5 was under maintenance program, dealer replaced a front rotors under program. now the program is over, i turn the rotors

get under there and check the control arms. upper - lower. how many miles on your x? i can bet they (the bushings and ball joints) are worn and need to be replaced. see if you can move them around by hand. leaving this unattended to can be disastrous.

Just tossing in a long thought...this topic has pages of threads on the brake shudder issue, but a fairly careful re-read of most
of the cogent threads offers little true remedy, imo. The stumble without a clear cut remedy(s), imo, is that none of us that have/had
that affliction have ever gone through a series of part(s) replacements that led to an "aha" moment suggesting the last fix, fixed the condition.

Repeating myself, but I had the high speed braking steering wheel shudder since ~2004, on our '01. The dlr could never dupe it, of course.
We got an extra year of "Maintenance", and finally had the front pads/rotors replaced under that program, at ~48,000 miles/2005. The shudder
was gone for about 10 mins, until I hit the brakes hard at high speed, upon leaving the dlr. They "could not duplicate"...

I lived with it since then, usually only feeling it on longer trips, when I had to dab or stab the brakes at high speed. I was also feeling it sometimes,
at lower speeds, rolling down our steep mtn road, this past year.

Trying to condense here:

Late summer of this year, I go to my Indie, a very knowledgeable shop in Asheville, and ask them to go through the entire front end and do some
high speed braking tests. They said the front end was in remarkably good shape and they also could not dupe the feeling. But, my oe B'stone Turanzas
that I got with the set of 19" 132s from a poster here, by now had ~35,000 miles on them and they were shot. I got a new set of Diamaris slapped on,
(not sure about the raves on that brand), and had them do new thrust arm bearings, while they were there, paid for by my Warranty Direct.

The replacement front brakes job from back in '05, has 25k miles on them, and look "very good", and I really never felt it was a "brake problem", per se.
With new tires, meticulously mounted and balanced and new thrust arm bushings, the fookin high speed brake steering shudder is gonzo...

However, I can not positively pin the "fix" on the TA bushings, vs the new tires, vs a combo of the two. I guess that's my point; I have yet to read of a
step by step parts replacement/repair, with results ascertained, that has "fixed" this common problem.

My money is it not being "warped rotors", in the OP's case, however...
