Extended warranty/maint
 

I just went to my dealer today, to address the extended warranty on my new 2005 (now 3 months old). They had wanted to sell it to me initially, of course, but I didn't feel like dealing with it at the time. Since I have learned about expensive brake jobs, broken window regulators, etc. on this board, and I put 18-20,000 miles/year on the car, I decided maybe I should go ahead and do this.

I paid ~$2600 for the extended warranty (from US Warranty Corp). $100 deductible, to 60 mo/100,000 miles. I also paid ~$1250 for the extended maintenance (72 mo/100,000 mi).

Total, including tax, $4233.

What do you think? Will I regret having done this?

I bought the BMW one year of extended maintenance for about $350 and it more than paid for itself. Now that I am at 49,000 miles and I plan on keeping the X5 for another 2 or 3 years, possibly longer. I need to think about an extended warranty and/or extended maintenance so your question is a very timely one. I'll be interested in the responses.

IMO, the extended maintenance was a great idea. Just a couple of brakes & rotor jobs should have you breaking even.

Well, Doc...a couple of questions before I offer an opin; but, you have pulled the trigger.
-the 60 months ext warr.: is that 60 months on top of the orig BMW 5 yrs or is that concurrent?
-the 100K mileage: I assume, like most warr's that is 100K Total on your odo?
-US Warranty: did you secure that by yourself or was that sold to you by the dlr?

The ExtMaint, though pricey, is good for a brake job and stuff, when you run past the BMW mileage coverage.

It seems like mileage is your wall, as you will bump into that before time expires, but curious on my earlier questions.

• 60 months total. My OEM warranty is 4 years/50k miles, so this makes it 5 years/100k mi.
• Yes, 100k odometer.
• Warranty sold by/through BMW dealership. Was not offered any other company.

I spoke with my service advisor on the way out the door, just BS'ing. He said the same thing, that one brake job would make the ext maint worthwhile.

I think your ExtWarr is in the zip code of most that are out there, (without having read your deal's fine print.) It is something you could have bought further down the road, time & mileage wise, but prices on coverage by good companies, is Not going down over time.

Interesting how your dlr humped you "their" 3rd party brand as opposed to BeamER's official, expensive, CPO-like version, but you can be sure your Stlr made a few quid on your deal. But, your Stlr will be bound to honor it, though other dlrs may balk a bit, as they often do.

I would not wring my hands over it...you got it, it's peace of mind, it's paid for in "now $" and at "now pricing". I think the real life coverage and ease of doing transactions on actual repairs far outweighs saving a few bucks in shopping for the cheapest deal out there. I would not have regrets, if I were you ;>)

Have no regrets, Doc. Mine had given me a hassle in the beginning, but a little elbow grease got it right, and it's already paid for itself.

One thing, I hope your deductible is per visit and not per repair.

I have 2003 X5 3.0 and have all kind of problems from the begining. I just bought my extend($2,550) and maintance($1,195) BMW warranty last week with $50 deductible.

I put 20k miles on my cars every year, 6 years 100k miles warranty just right to me. The brake replacement will cost me more than $1200 from dealer OR $400 parts from DIY every 35k~45k miles on my E39. So, $1200 is a good deal for maintance warranty. Don't miss it... :thumbup:

I bought my '02 3.0i with and the dealer didn't even know it had an extended maint. warranty the previous owner only bought a little over a year ago. It goes up to 100,000 miles or 11/2007. I found it in the owner's packet and showed it to them AFTER I signed and it really surprised them - and it was transferable. The prev. owner paid $1,965 for it too!!! I just had the Inspection II done on it and paid nothing......it felt good. It also covers some wear & tear items too.......:thumbup:

$100 per "work order" is how it was explained to me. For example, if I take the car in for a window regulator and transmission problem to be fixed at the same time, it would be $100. If I took them in 2 different times, it would be $100 each trip.

Seemed fair to me.

Thanks, guys, for the commentary. As MD said, the "peace of mind" is definitely nice to have.

My bumper to bumper is expiring on the 12th of this month and I called my dealer for prices today. The salesman basically said list price is what the warranties are going for and I should stop by to read the details this week. I think I will get it and probably take the 3 or 4 yr extended warranty with the $100 deductible. The peace of mind allone is worth it and I can relate to how you feel about the purchase of yours. My maint expires next yr so I will also extend that when the time comes. The good thing is that roadside still works and the warranty is covered by all BMW dealers. You never know where you make break down........ :thumbup:
